James League 1861 Surnames: LEAGUE #01809 Robert Portsche <rportsch@ix.netcom.com> Sat, 20 Nov 1999 << Previous in Thread Response >> Hi: I believe the James League, born 1861, that you are looking for was the son of Alexander League. The following is what I know about him:
James Taylor League - Born October 1, 1861 (or 1864) - Birthplace Kentucky
This was a son of Alexander League of Harrodsburg (Mercer County), Kentucky.
On Thursday, July 30, 1998, while at the National Archives, I examined Alexander League's Civil War Pension file. Information found therein indicates he was born about 1834, and his address at time of enlistment was Post Office: Harrodsburg (Mercer County), Kentucky. Alexander League enlisted into the Company F, 19th Kentucky Infantry, as a Private on November 1, 1861, and was discharged on February 1864 at Decrouses Point, Texas. Information shows that he was originally married to Sally Ann Cofman, who passed away on August 20, 1894, at Shelby City, Kentucky. He remarried on November 30, 1897, to Emma Garfield Salln?, at Nicholsville, Kentucky. The file indicates his occupation was always as a day laborer on a farm. He received a pension of $12 per month. Papers indicate he passed away about June, 1905. Children shown are as follows:
James Taylor League - Born October 1, 1861 (or 1864)
Samuel Grant League - Born January 12, 1872
Henry Norris League - Born August 14, 1873
George Clinton League - Born April 10, 1875
Richard Phillip League - Born January 1, 1879The following information concerns a James T. League, which is believed to be associated with this James Taylor League, and has not been substantiated. It was obtained via the Internet concerning a Mrs. Josie League, said to be the daughter of the late Nancy Newton League and James T. League. From that record, if this belongs to this James T. League, the following children were born to James T. League and Nancy Newton League:
Lula League Lippert of Versailles,
Ellen League Meismer of Louisville,
Mary League Florian of Madison, Indiana,
Minnie League Wise of Midway
Carolyn League McDonald of Lexington
James League of Midway,
George League of Brunswick, Ohio,
Alexander League of Cleveland, OhioLet me know if this is your line.

The reason I was interested is because of the Richard League, age 8, who was living with this family in 1850. Do you have any information on this Richard League????? The Trisler record was also interesting to me because living nearby was an "Alderson" family. A Richard League, married a Susan Alderson in about 1826 in Mercer County. The 1850 Mercer County Census Book, on page 291, listed the following information for the Trisler family, and a Richard League living with that family:

Massey/League Surnames: LEAGUE, MASSEY #01821 Robert Portsche <rportsch@ix.netcom.com> Sun, 21 Nov 1999 << Previous in Thread John: I have seen the exchanges of E-Mails between you and Joyce, and now I believe our family is in this line of Leagues and Massies.
I went to the Daughters of the American Revolution here in Washington, and re-referenced Mercer County census records for 1850. I saw some very interesting connections.
James League, shown to be 24 years of age, working as a blacksmith, is shown living with two League girls (probably his sisters, Mary 17, and Sarah 19.) Also living at the same residence is Jane Massey, age 16.
The James League in our line is James G. A. League, born 1826, in Mercer County, Kentucky. He married a Maranda Jane Massey, and they moved to Andrew County, Missouri. He died in 1894. They had several children whom my brother has record of.
I noted the marriage record of James League to Maranda Jane Massie, April 22, 1850, in Mercer County, with bondsman Absolom Massie, who stated the bride is 21 years or older.
Next, I see that George League married Elizabeth Lyons, August 17, 1847, with Bondsman being Able Lyons. (This is the record that Joyce has been inquiring about.)
The 1850 census shows George and Elizabeth League, ages 37 and 23, respectively, living at same residence as Absolom Massey, age 35; his wife Susan Massey, age 45, and probably their daughter Mary, age 5.
It sure looks like Maranda Jane Massey was the daughter of Absolom Massey whom you mentioned.
Hope that you will respond as I would like learning more about your research, and will provide you with what I know.

I do note, however that Thomas had a child named William D. My Samuel Latimer, Jr. had a child named William D., probably named for William Dougherty of Mercer. My Samuel married Polly Dougherty, the daughter of James Dougherty, Jr. and Rebecca Cunningham, the daughter of William Cunningham. It may be that William Dougherty was a brother of Polly. I have not tracked that down yet.
