Thank you for your information, it would appear this is my Grandfathers family. He died Dec 25 1952 when I was only 2.He was born in 1861 and is buried in the Frankfort cemetery with his wife Nacy Belle Newton. Of the children listed there are only 3 of the girls left alive, they are Lula, Mary and Carolyn. George was my father and passed away in Jan 1997. There were 15 children total with deaths and births listed in my message of 15 November. Do you have any information about any of the Leagues you listed above? Anything would be appreciated. Do you know who was Alexander parents were and where they came from? I would like to be able to trace the family back as far as possible. Thanks for your help.

James T. League, Mercer County, Kentucky.

Mike:

No, I do not know who Alexander League's parents were. I wish I knew. I have a hunch that he may be related to our line of the Leagues, but there seems to be a complete void of information in that era.

Our line of the Leagues also exists in Mercer County during the same period. I have knowledge of several Leagues in Mercer County during the 1800 - 1850 period. One line is a John League who married a Mary Garr, and later moved to Indiana. But.... I don't know where that John League came from... I do know he was NOT the father of Alexander. There was also a Richard League, who married a Susan Alderson in about 1826. This is our line, but we do not know who their children were except for James G. A. League (born about 1826), and a Richard League (born about 1834). It is possible that Alexander was one of their children, but we do not have any confirmation of this.

We are still actively searching for help on this line of the Leagues.

Thanks for posting and will share any new information that we come across.

I am trying to locate some information that I ran across the other day, concerning John T. Woods and Emma (Cleveland)
Woods. If anyone has any information concerning this couple, it would be greatly appreciated.

They served as doctor and nurse at the field hospital, which had previously occupied the Harrodsburg Presbyterian Church in Mercer County. This information told some very interesting things about John T. Woods.

Thank you in advance, for whatever you can do to help me.

Mike:

I don't know if I provided this information to you previously, but it relates to your family:

The following information concerns a James T. League, which is believed to be associated with this James Taylor League, and has not been substantiated. It was obtained via the Internet concerning a Mrs. Josie League (see record below), said to be the daughter of the late Nancy Newton League and James T. League. From that record, if this belongs to this James T. League, the following children were born to James T. League and Nancy Newton League:

Lula League Lippert of Versailles,
Ellen League Meismer of Louisville,
Mary League Florian of Madison, Indiana,
Minnie League Wise of Midway
Carolyn League McDonald of Lexington
James League of Midway,
George League of Brunswick, Ohio,
Alexander League of Cleveland, Ohio

"Mrs. Josie Bell League, 59, died at her residence on the Devil's Hollow Road at 12:10 a.m., today after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Nancy Newton League and James T. League. She was a native of Woodford County, born there April 15, 1914, but lived most of her life in Franklin County. She was a member of the North Benson Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, William League of Frankfort, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Nancy Shouse, Mrs. Sonia Jefferies and Mrs. Ella Young, all of Frankfort; two sons, Billy J. League and Henry M. League, both of Frankfort.; five sisters, Mrs. Lula Lippert of Versailles, Mrs. Ellen Meismer of Louisville, Mrs. Mary Florian of Madison, Indiana, Mrs. Minnie Wise of Midway and Mrs. Carolyn McDonald of Lexington; three brothers, James League of Midway, George League of Brunswick, Ohio, and Alexander League of Cleveland, Ohio; eleven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Harrod Brothers Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m., Wednesday with Rev. Homer Brewer, pastor of the North Benson church, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Woodford County."

Hi Mike:

Thanks for responding. I believe you did provide in one of your other messages posted the birthdates for all of James T. League's children, but if you have further information, I and others no doubt would be interested.

If James T. League's father is if fact Alexander League (which I believe to be the case,_ born 1834 in Mercer County, he may very well be related in some way to the Richard League and James G. A. League we are trying to trace, both of whom were also born in Mercer County - 1834 and 1826, respectively.

With regard to your question as to when the first Leagues came to this country, I have only limited information. From what I can determine, there was a William League who came to Maryland in 1680. I believe from records I have seen that he was still alive in 1713. There was also a John League in Maryland who was married in 1700, for which I have some scattered history. It is probably from this line that many of the Leagues in the Baltimore area are related.

There is also documentation indicating that another James League came over to the US during Revolutionary War times, bringing seven sons. They also settled in the Baltimore area.

There is another branch of the Leagues that were in Amelia County, Virginia, as early as 1740. Most noteable is James League, born about 1725. There is quite a bit of material available concerning this family. He married a Mary Ann Marchbanks (sp), and pages from this families bible list all of their children. One or more of their children moved to South Carolina in about 1780.

There possibly was another branch of the Leagues who settled in North Carolina, as records support them being their as early as 1750.

I certainly don't know all of the lineage, but I keep trying to trace toward finding out where our line fits in. Thanks for your interest.
