James Ray Surnames: JAMES, RAY #01174 Jack Dayton <jdayton4@aol.com> Mon, 22 Feb 1999 << Previous in Thread Response >> James Ray and his brother William lived in Fort Harrod in 1777. James and William with two others were looking for cattle that had strayed or been taken when they ran into a indian party on the way to attack the fort. William was killed by the indians but James was able to run back to the fort and alert the settlers of the impending indian attack. History books which outline the incident list William as the step-son of Hugh McGary. I have found where Hugh McGary married Mary Buntin Ray. I not sure who her first husband was. I believe this James Ray eventually settled in Nicholas Co. Top | Search by Surname | Researchers Page

His mother, Mary - nee Bunton - m 2nd Hugh McGary (his first of 3 wives) and they had children. Kentucky before 1820. Does anyone know if there is a tie with the Mercer Co. KY to Madison, Owsley Co. Lee Co. and Breathitt Co. Kentucky. David I. ROWLAND married Mahala TYREE 5 May 1829 Madison Co. KY. Does anyone know where David and Mahala were in 1840-50 ? And who were his parents, I do not have a KY index to help me. I have been trying to find how Mahala ties to my 4th Great-Grandfather, Anderson TYREE married Elizabeth BUTNER TYREE in 1826 Madison Co. KY. Anderson and Elizabeth are listd on the 1850 Mercer Co. went to 1860 Estill Co. KY.
I know that ROWLAND and TYREE [TIREY] intermarried in Owsley Co. KY they tie into my Great-Aunt Rose Caudill [COTTLE] Simpkins who was born c1867 Owsley Co. married John ROWLAND c1887, he was born in Owsley Co. they were listed on the 1900 Lee and 1910 Breathitt. Rose's grandparents were Eli and Polly TIRE SIMPKINS md 1831 Morgan Co. KY, Polly as were her brother [md GIBBS] and sister [md HOLLON] were in Breathitt, ties to Wolfe Co. KY.
I have been trying to tie the two ROWLAND and TIREY-TYREE-TYRA lines together. TIREY also ties to WALLEN-WALDEN in Rockcastle Co. I have been working on tying them together with my direct line of TYREE-WALLEN-WALDEN in Estill Co. KY.Thankyou,
