Martha "Minnie" Olson of Pleasant Hill Surnames: LARSON, OLSON #00052 Luise <nikkiluise@yahoo.com> Wed, 22 Sep 1999 Martha and Olef Larson were recruited by the Shakers to come to the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill. Because of the naming system in Sweden, each generation took their father's name and added son to it if male, dotter or datter if female. However when the family Americanized their names, both boys and girls used the name of Olson. When they arrived in Pleasant Hill it was 1868. They did appear on the 1870 census at Pleasant Hill, but of course the males and females were in separate living quarters. Although Olef and the children left the Shaker community, Martha remained behind. In all future census Olef used the name Larson and it appeared that he remained married to Martha "Minnie" Olson. She died in Kentucky about 1915. I am not sure which surname she used after Olef left. It could have been either Olson or Larson. Did the Shakers leave behind any records? Where would she have been buried? Top | Search by Surname | Researchers Page
