Magoffin County Historical Society
"Preserving Our Past for the Future"

Membership Information

The Magoffin County Historical Society invites you to become a member of our group. Members receive our printed journals that are mailed out quarterly (usually February, June, September, and December). Each Journal contains at least 40 pages of material on eastern Kentucky genealogy and history. We print family articles and queries, also stories about our people and area. We collect and print church, school, newspaper, and court records from the past.

We invite contributions of material on eastern Kentucky families to include in our Journal. If you would like to become a member, the fee is $15 per year. If you would like to see if our material would be of benefit to you we will send you an issue from a previous year of our Journal for $4.

Please send your request with your name and address to:

Our Purpose

Our goal is to collect, preserve, and disseminate the history and genealogy of our eastern Kentucky region. Our forefathers, many of whom were veterans of the Revolutionary War, settled the area and carved a home for their families from the wilderness. These hardy pioneers loved these mountains, as do their descendants. We believe we should keep alive the spirit and memory of those who came before us. We believe knowledge of our history and ancestry gives us the impetus to build a better future for those who come after us.

Our Genealogy Library

The Genealogy Library of the Magoffin County Historical Society is located next door to the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center in Salyersville, KY. We occupy the building formerly used by the Salyersville Post Office. Our address is 191 South Church Street, Salyersville, KY 41465. Our telephone number is 606-349-1607, Fax number is 606-349-1353

Our Cabin Complex

The new Magoffin County Pioneer Village and Museum is located at 239 South Church Street in Salyersville, Kentucky between WRLV Salyersville Radio station and the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center. Presently we have a collection of 14 authentic log buildings that have been reconstructed on our grounds.

Our log cabin structures serve as living history centers with displays and demonstrations of early crafts. We are presently accepting furnishings and artifacts of early pioneer settlers for display in our Log Cabin Complex. We request donations of items from anyone along with a written history of each item. We are continuing to catalog and work on displays of these materials for our museum.
