Book Review. In Search of Morgan's Station and "The Last Indian Raid in Kentucky", by Harry G. Enoch, c1997. A 208 page paperback for $27.00 might sound steep, but not after you view its wealth of information concerning not only Morgan's Station, but of Kentucky's Eastern Frontier during 1769-1796, especially the early days of Montgomery & Bath Counties. Names such as Boone, Clark, Filson, Kenton, Montgomery, Morgan, Tecumseh, and Wayne are but a few of the many who you will read about that shaped the area. The last Indian raid in Kentucky, involving the Shawnees and Cherokees, carried out at Morgan's Station is greatly told in detail. The story of Morgan's Station is enhanced by sketches and photographs of what remains today. In addition, for the historian, first-hand accounts of the surviving pioneers from notebooks kept by Presbyterian minister John D. Shane, an epilogue that tells the fates of the captives, and end notes that show the sources of information. Then for the genealogists, a 1797 tax assessment roll of Montgomery County pioneers is listed and an index of each name listed throughout the book. I not only recommend this publication, but so does the Montgomery County Historical Society. Montgomery County is celebrating their bicentennial this year and you can read about their beginnings in this very well written book that is available through Heritage Books, Inc., 1540E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, Maryland 20716, 1-800-398-7709.
