Morgan County was formed in 1822 from Floyd, and Bath Counties. The county seat being West Liberty.
Within these pages you will learn more about the historical and genealogical history of Morgan County.

County Seat: Created: 1822
Parent: Floyd, Bath
County Seat: West Liberty

The county was named for Gen. Daniel Morgan, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and WEST LIBERTY was established as the county seat in 1824.

Morgan County, Ky is located in the Piedmont of the Western Cumberland Plateau. As one travels eastward from West Liberty, the hills gradually get higher.
Originally the county was much bigger than it is now. Still Morgan County is one of the largest of Ky's. counties. It encompasses 240,000 acres or 375 square miles.
Morgan County was once made up of many small communities or towns.
Many communities that grew up during the timber booms of World War I, and the onset of the"Roaring Twenties", vanished or became ghost towns when the timber industry ended.

Ghosts:
Morgan county - Wrigley Hill - Just off of 519 lays route 7 which flow across Wrigley Hill. Late at night people driving across Wrigley Hill have seen a woman hitch-hiking or the have seen her in their car.

Civil War
A second courthouse was among some twenty-nine buildings destroyed by fire during the Civil War, along with the offices of the circuit and county clerks, and many irreplaceable county records. Although some influential families were proUnion during the war, most Morgan County residents had Confederate sympathies. Confederate leaders from Morgan included Capt. John T. Williams and Maj. William Mynheir (who, as sheriff in 1853, carried out the county's only hanging). Although no major battles occurred in the county, there were a few skirmishes, including three at West Liberty and one at McClannahan Hill. (From The Kentucky Encyclopedia, edited by John Kleber.)

The population of the rural county was 10,019 in 1970; 12,103 in 1980; and 11,648 in 1990.

(JUDGE) WILLIAM BRUCE LYKINS (child of Nancy Jane Williams and David
J. Lykins)
b. 28 Feb 1811 Floyd Co. KY d. 21 May 1893 (buried
Walnut Grove Cem., Caney Cem. #3, Caney, Morgan Co. KY) m. 1st 21
Nov 1829 to Prudence Barker b. 14 Mar 1811 NC d. 15 Jan 1889
Caney, Morgan Co. KY, dau of John Barker and Jane Porter.
He was the first Judge of Morgan Co. KY (1850), was surveyor in 1828,
established the Regular Baptist Church at Cannel City, KY. He
served as minister of the Walnut Grove Church for over 33 years
and was a southern sympathizer during the Civil War.

He and his five sons enlisted in the Confederate Army in October of 1861. He
entered as a Private but was soon appointed Chaplain of the 5th
KY Inf. Marshalls Brigade, Army of Southwestern Virginia. He
is buried in the old Caney Cemetery in Morgan Co. KY. He lived
at the head of Caney Creek at Walnut Grove on Stacy Fork, Morgan
Co. KY.
A story from the past
In the 1860's the United States was being torn apart with disagreements
over slavery and states rights. The leaders of the Confederacy were
predominately Democrats and the Republicans lead by Abraham Lincoln
upheld the views of the Union. Kentucky though a border state was
clearly in the arms of the Confederacy. Voting records show that
only one man with the name Lykins supported the Republican Party
in Kentucky. He was a blacksmith who lived in Caney, Morgan County,
Kentucky by the name of Peter D. Lykins.

One of the most tragic product of the Civil War was the divisions
it caused not only between states and political views but between
family members as well. Peter and his wife Evaline had more than
their share of heartache in this area, they saw their whole family
shattered by this division. They were staunch Union supporters as
were their two eldest sons who enlisted in the Union Army. Their
other sons were Confederate sympathizers along with all their neighbors and others.

The feelings against Peter by his Confederate sympathizing kinsmen
reached intense proportions. These strong beliefs and hot tempers
finally resulted in Peter being visited in the middle of the night
by an angry group of his neighbors and relatives, including his
father. The group was led by William Lykins, who was not only his
neighbor, a Baptist preacher, the Judge of Morgan County, but his
brother as well. They were barely given time to get together a few
household belongings before being forced to leave. Peter and his
family fled in the cold darkness with $1,000 in gold and Evaline
dressed up as a pregnant woman to help them get through the
Confederate lines. Peter D. and his family traveled north,
settling finally in Lewis County where he founded the town of
Petersville.

Where before Peter had been a staunch Democrat, as were his Morgan
County kin, he now became a rabid Republican. Being forcibly evicted
from his home county as he was, he forbade the word "Democrat" to
be said aloud in his house. Neither Peter D., nor Evaline, ever returned to Morgan County and they never saw their parents or other kinsmen again, with the exception of the visits of Dudley Curl, Peter's nephew. It was over 100 years later before there ever was any contact between these two branches of the family.

Dale Gillis 2005-03-05 18:02:46 _Clarification Regarding the Eli Lykin's
There is a mixup of two Eli Lykins in many databases.
THERE IS NO MAHALA GILLEY ANN CARTER. There is a
Gilley Ann Carter and a Mahala Wilson, married to
two separate Eli Lykins, and have been combined
into one family in error. The source of this
error is probably the Lykins book published by
the Magoffin County Historical Society.
Source: Dale Gillis, Federal Census, Morgan County Marriage Records
One is an Eli Lykins b. 1832 Virginia and
married Mahala Wilson 7 Apr 1853 and shows
up in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Magoffin County
Census with their children. Ashberry, Rebecca,
Willis, Elizabeth, Issac, and Fany.

This is not my Eli Lykins. My Eli Lykins
was b. 1832 Kentucky and married Gilley Ann Carter
and shows up in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Morgan
County KY, census with their children. My basis
for the names and the children are family records,
census records, marriage records, birth and death
records etc.

Floyd Co. at the mouth of Jones Creek, which is named after him. He was
ordained as a Baptist minister in 1811, and was a member of the South Fork
Baptist church in Malone, Morgan Co. He was one of the preachers who
established the Burning Springs Association in 1813. Early records for the
family are in Floyd Co., and later ones are in Morgan Co., but this does
not indicate a migration - it is due to Ambrose having settled in the part
of Floyd Co. that became Morgan Co.

Children of Ambrose Jones and Martha Craig are included because of the connections to the Williams family.

note:  Martha Perry was a WELLS, m. in 1819, Floyd Co. See TEK.
Notes: Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, & 8 went to school during the year. Thomas and Martha have a married son and 4 married daughters in their own households in this census: Cyrus, living in HH#1168, Elizabeth, living in HH#0948, Sarah, living in HH#0028, Rachel, living in HH#0023, and Frances, living in HH#1159. Information from Geraldine Dunn indicates that there was a son, Daniel Dudley Perry who does not appear in the 1850 census. Following up via familysearch.org I discovered that he was born 14 Jan 1847 and died 11 Nov 1847.
