Born May 28, 1909, in Morgan County, Ky., Jean was a daughter of the late William Brice Wells and Zada Day Wells. She was a former partner of Herald and Stewart funeral Home in west Liberty, and member of the First united Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A.J.Herald. Survivors include one son, Conrad Herald and wife, Margaret, of Okeechobee, fla., three trandchildren, Terry Herald of Oakland, Michigan, Cheri Harvey and Gina Johnson, both of Mount Sterling; 8 great grandchildren; 5 great, great grandchildren; two brothers, Mitchell Wells of Okeechobee, Fla., and Bert Wells of Cannel City. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Herald and Stewart Home for Funerals Chapel with Rev Sam Knox and Rev Fred Wiles officiating. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Blevins; two sons-in-lasw, Ray Cox and Reuben Wright; one grandson, Corey Ishmael Blevins; one great grandson, Zachary Frank Fannin; one great granddaughter, Kristen Lynn Keeton; four brothers, Luther Barnett, Troy Barnett, Roy Barnett and Alton Barnett; three sisters, Laura Watkins, Opal Adkins, and Nanny Collinsworth. Manford Williams (no photo) Manford Williams, 80, of Springfield Oh, died Sunday July 14, 2002, at his residence. Born Nov 26, 1921, in Magoffic County, Kentucky, Manford was a son of the late Lon Williams and Frona Jenkins Williams. He was a finish carpenter, and assisted his wife in operation of The Last Stop carryout. Mr. Williams was a member of the United Baptist Church and the Union Church. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Myrtle Prater Williams; one son, Jim D. and Debbie Williams, of South Vienna, Oh.; one brother, Cortis Williams and wife, Martha, or Urbana, Oh; two sisters, Malta Howard of Mount Sterling, and Melda Downing and Husband, Robert, of Mesa, Arizona; one grandson, Jim d. Gilbert Lewis (photo available) Gilbert Lewis, 79, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, in Charleston S.C. Born May 16, 1923, at Stacy Fork, Ky, Gilbert was the son of the late Edgar and Etta Ferguson Lewis. Two brothers preceded him in death; Erndon Lewis and Rockford Lewis; two sisters, Thelma McGuire and Alberta Lykins. Surviving are one brother Willard Lewis of Mt. Orab, Oh., four children, Danny, Scottie, Robin, and Brian; a special friend and step daughter, Lisa McDonald. His tour of duty in the armed services during World War II led him to N. Africa and Europe, earning him a Bronze Star. He retired from the ship yard in Charleston, S.C., and made his home there until his passing. He was a friend maker and all who knew him loved him. Hall, 92, of Gilmore, died Monday, August 12, 2002, at Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital, in West Liberty, Ky, following an extended illness. Born Sept 15, 1909, in Wolfe County, Ky, Sammie was a son of the late Jown W. Hall and Annie Mae Taulbee Hall. He was a retired coal miner and farmer, and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Fern Keith Hall, one son, Andy Conroy Hall, 4 grandchildren and his brothers and sisters. She was born in Jamestown Tennessee, in 1928, and lived most of her childhood life at Wrigley, Ky. Katie was the daughter of the late Meardie and Mollie Howard Adkins. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Whitt and Charles Whitt; one daughter, Bonnie Whitt; three sisters, Lillian Channell, Leah Davis, and Tina Keeton; and one brother, Buster Adkins. Survivors include four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy (Prudhomme) and Gregory Brigman of Lafayette, Tennessee, Pauline (Adkins) Mercurio of Troy, Oh, Angie (Caskey) LKowrie of Fairborn, Oh, Brenda Haywood of Cincinnati, Oh, and one sone Mitchell Whitt, of Medway, Oh; five sisters, Thelma Bourne of Georgetown, Indiana, Delma Smith of Lakeland, Florida, Sudie Reynold of Springfield, Oh, Mary Lamb of Richmond, Ky, and Nina Roberts of Venice, Florida; two loving aunts, Effie Fraley of Springfield, Oh, and Lucy Fannin of Sandy Hook. Cassis was born at Index, Ky, on Dec 5, 1907, and raised in Pleasant Run, Ky, by her parents, the late John D. Engle, Sr. and Mary Combs Engle. Cassie was united in marriage to Elmer Lewis on Nov 21, 1928. He preceeded her in death on March 21, 1996. Also preceding her ;in death was an infant son, Mervil Lewis, two sisters, Lourainey Hurley and Suda Lewis, four brothers, Lloyd Engle, Onzie Engle, Lexie Engle, and Jim Frank Engle. She is survived by one daughter, Janet C. Hutchinson of Hillard Oh; one granddaughter, Valerie Kennedy and husband, Jason, of Hillard, Oh; one grandson, Jonathat Hutchinson, of Beavercreek, Oh. Also surviving are two brothers, C.B. Engle and wife, Oleta, and John D. Engle Jr, all of Xenia, Oh; two sisters-in-law,m Darlene Engle and Emma Jean Engle, both of West Liberty,. Cassie accepted Jesus Christ at the age of seventeen and lived a devoted Christial life. She loved reading and studying the Bible. For many years she was a Sunday School teacher at Pleasant Run, where she was also a 4-H leader. She had many hobbies and interests. Her love of community history led her to write a series of articles, "Pleasant Run, Past and Present" which were published in the Licking Valley Courier. She did extensive work on family genealogy. She worked in her vegetable garden with great pride, which carried over into her home canning. On May 11, 2002, she was thrilled when th Morgan County Historical Society presented her with a Certificate of Merit for furthering historical preservation in Morgan County. Cassie made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime, most of which she sold or gave as gifts to friends and family. She enjoyed having lots of company in her home. She will be greatly missed. Born Apr 8, 1911, at Woodsbend, Ky, a son of the late Greebury and Nannie Henry Cox. He was united in marriage to Daisy Brooks of Woodsbend, in 1937, and to this union were born three children. He served in both the US Army and the US Marines. During WWII he tested airplane engines at Wright Plant in Cincinnatti, Oh, which is now General Electric. After the war he moved his family to the Dayton Oh area, where he worked at NCR. Jesse liked history and English literature. He studied sentence structures and writing. He wrote several unpublished short studies. He also like farming and raising cattle. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Daisy, three children, Helen Cox of Cincinnatti, Oh, Fred Cox of Hillsboro, Oh, and Rosemary Depetro of Pittsburg, Pa. Burial took place in Midway, Oh. Mrs. Caskey was born Nov 8, 1918, in Morgan Co, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Cantrell Doolin. She was a housewife and a member of the Second Freewill Baptist Church in Ashland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie A Caskey; three brothers, Thurman Doolin, Ace Doolin, and Ellis Doolin, and by two sisters, Bessie Hunter and Della Jackson. Survivors include two sons, William Caskey of Louisa, Ky, and Ronald Caskey of Ashland; three daughters, Janet Dixon of Westwood, Shirley Runyon of Russell, and Sue Corey of Ashland; two sisters, Rosie Ison of West Liberty, Ky and Cossie Gevedon of Ohio; twenty-eight grand children, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, and four g-g-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 27, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Rev. Kenneth Walker with burial in Ashland Cemetary. Born Jan 14, 1930, in Morgan Co, Ky, Ray was a son of the late Arthur Barker and Rissie Keaton Barker. He was a retired construction worker and farmer. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barker was preceeded in death by his wife, Evelyn Ison Barker; two sisters, Lida Lucas and Helen Holbrook, and three brothers, Curt Barker, Roy Barker, and an infant brother. Survivors include two daughters, Betty and Russel Kemplin of Denniston, Kathy and Homer Adkins of Index; three sons, Larry W and Brenda Barker of Sandy Hook, Billy G and Barbara Ann Barker of West Liberty, Roggie D and Mary Barker of Ezel; four sisters, Alice Smith, Ann Dalton, both of West Liberty, Goldie Smith of Paris Ky, Lou Trimble of Dayton Oh;two brothers, Dallas Barker of West Liberty, and Cecil Barker of Hazel Green; thirteen grand children and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 at Herald and Stewart and Halsey Funeral Chapel with Elder Ricky Holbrook and Bobby Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Day Cemetary, Hwy 172, West Liberty Ky, with Herald and Stewart and Halsey Funeral Home, of West Liberty, in charge of arrangements. Grandsons served as pallbearers. He was born June 6, 1932. He was the son of Carson and Dora Caudill Back. He is survived by his wife, Masie Back; two sons, John Back of Petal, Miss., and James Back of Xenia; three daughters, Lorie and Amy Back, and Christina Chaney all of Caneyville; three sisters, Edna Flannery of Batesville, Indiana, Lula Davidson of Georgia and Nellie Mae of Palm Bay, Florida and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, March 1, 2002 at 2 PM at the Dermitt Funeral Home, Caneyville, today from 5-8 PM and at the William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven Friday after 9 AM. She was born October 27, 1936, in Morgan County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late David and Ethel (Whitt) Hurley. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jerri Stacy of Fairborn; three daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnn Ritchie of Fairborn, Rita and Bill Wick of Fairborn, and Gina Smith of Huber Heights; two sisters, Betty Whitt and Judy Shirley Conley, both of Fairborn; a sister-in-law, Lillie Rose Hurley of Medway; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Bobby Hurley. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 PM in the Belton Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton - Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn, where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m., with the Reverends H. Allen Gross and Orby Hurley officiating. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery.
