Broadway (Lower) School

I REMEMBER MISS METCALF, MISS OLDHAM, MISS MCGRUTER (probably misspelled), Mrs. Wooten (my first grade teacher), Georgia Bell Baker, she was my dad's aunt, but I don't think I had her for a teacher, I can't remember the principal's name. Some of the classmates I remember were....Peggy Ann Campbell, Carol Anne Campbell, Eleanor Ann Eversole, Emma Gene Benton, Loretta Benton and a girl named Courtney. I remember one day Courtney's mother brought in a little portable Victrola and the teacher played music for us. The only Victrola I had ever seen before this was a floor model that stood in our dining room in our log cabin house on Second Creek. My Grandfather was very musical and he loved that Victrola. I'm surprised I didn't name one of my daughters Courtney because I loved this name and still do. I wish I knew that little girl's last name and what became of her. Do any of you know any of the names I have mentioned? I attended school there during the WWII years, so I'd be surprised if you knew any of the same teachers or school mates that I knew................JoAnne Walker Long, Rockledge, FL April 13, 2008

I knew Emma Gene Benton and Courtney's last name was Noel. I remembered her from the Christmas song "First Noel". Everyone thought Mrs. Oldham was mean, but I always got along good with her..... I went to Lower Broadway from 1941-45. This picture does not include the fire escape tube on the left side of the building. Teachers were Ms. Metcalf, Bonta, Harris, Magruder, and May. You should have seen all the scrap drives for rubber, cans, etc. we had during the war. I rode a taxi and bus from Hardburly to attend school.............Harry George Birmingham, San Jose, CA., April 13, 2008

I attended grade school there also. I started in 1956 and had Mrs. Willobey [not sure how to spell her last name] in the first grade. Stayed there for 5 yrs.[ I think ] then went to Upper Broadway then to Roy G. Eversole Elem. Thanks for the picture. Wish I had one of Upper Broadway. I remember Ms. Metcalf. She was my next door neighbor and 2nd. grade teacher. You might have went to school with my older sisters and cousins. They were Ratliff's. Clara and Mary Elizabeth are my sisters and Janis, Betty. Charles and Luther are my cousins. They went to school there around that time. Small world isn't it? ............Edith Ratliff McPherson, Grapevine, Perry Co. KY., April 13, 2008

I have very vivid memories of Lower Broadway School. Mrs. Bonta was my first grade teacher and we had a little rhythm band and I played sticks. I always wanted to play a tamborine. We had May Day and the first grade dressed in night gowns and carried candles and sang "OH do you know the land of Nod". And the higher grades did the May Pole. Mrs. Pendleton was a third grade teacher . The fourth grade was a lady that I can't remember but her husband was in service. When we had a fire drill we had to slide down a tube to get outside. We played hopscotch and we jumped the steps at the front door. We had to line up to march inside. No foolishness..............Glynna Miniard Richie, April 15, 2008

Glynna, You have brought back a memory or two to me. I started Kindergarten at Broadway and my older sisters also attended there. I do remember the name Bonta but can't picture her. My sister remembers her well. I have tried so hard to remember things I was just too young I guess. Now that you mentioned the fire drills I recall how scared I was of that tube we had to slide down. Until your little reminder the only thing I could remember was the smell of vegetable soup from the kitchen. sometimes when I go to a restaurant that aroma reminds me of school. I do remember some type of an Indian show with Indians in their native dress. Thanks For The Memories...........Rita Ann Ellington Day, April 15, 2008

My son, Gary Horne, went to Lower Broadway. Some of his classmates that comes to mind are Jimmy Maggard, Sandra Dawhare, Missy Mitchell, Diana Garnett, Jack Duff, Peyton Morton, Bill Edd Cannon to name a few.......Pat Horne, Apr 16, 2008
