Lynda,
Here is a picture of the Grigsby Grade School that was located about three miles up the creek, near the
Marcum Smith Store. I went to school there, graduating from the eighth grade in May of 1947. To my
knowledge this is the only picture showing most of the building in existence, although several people
have copies of this photo. The well out front was drilled, sometime after I left. We had to carry water
from about a quarter of a mile over a path. James and Edith Combs Feltner, d/o Martin and
Safronia Mullins Combs, were good enough to let us us their well.
Some of the teachers that I remember......
Violet Williams, d/o Thomas and Ella May Grigsby Williams. My first grade teacher.
Eulanda Feltner Young, d/o Martin and Rhoda J. Stacy Feltner.
Everett Bowling, s/o Samuel H. and Eliza Engle Bowling.
Mrs. Triplett, I never knew her first name or maiden name.
Kizzie Combs, I don't know it that's her maiden name or married name.
School was taught there until the early 1960's when they closed the school and the kids went to the
Wooton School at Airport Gardens. The county put the school property up for sale after it closed and
my cousin Angie Sue Singleton Grigsby bought the property and later tore the building down. There
were knot holes in the walls and us kids would stuff paper in them. When the building was tore down
many papers were collected by Sue and she passed them on to the ones she could identify. I have
several old papers of my spelling, arithmetic, etc.
Here are some of the teachers that taught after I left.
Beulah Mae Hurt Grigsby. She was a next door neighbor and graduated from Robinson High school the
year before me. She got her teacher credentials at Caney Junior College.
Zella June Hurt Combs, married Elmer Ray Combs, s/o Roscoe and Eva Feltner Combs. Zella was a
class mate of mine at Robinson High School and a sister to Beulah Mae. She went to Caney JuniorCollege also.
Angie Sue Grigsby Singleton, my cousin. Angie Sue married James Brooks Singleton, s/o of Samuel and
Mattie Gayheart Singleton. I believe Angie was teaching when they closed the school.
I thought you might want to use the picture on your school picture webpage.
