CEMETERY SIGNS

The Simpson County Historical Society is interested in identifying all cemeteries in Simpson County and surrounding couties in Kentucky and Tennessee. This project includes all cemeteries, well-kept larges ones, or small areas with no markers at all. Any person interested in purchasing a cemetery sign for these area cemeteries should contact the Simpson County Historical Society.

To the right is a picture of the sign identifying the Joseph Meguiar Cemetery on Lake Spring Road. The sign has the number of the cemetery as it was identified in the book published by the Historical Society in 1982, Simpson County, Kentucky Cemeteries. Each of the 223 cemeteries identified in the county at that time were given a location: NE, NW, SW, and SE; plus a number for each section of the county. If the cemetery or cemeteries are listed in the cemetery book, that location can be included on the sign.

By placing a sign at the location of the burials, this project will help to preserve the sites from the danger of being desecrated. The sign can be placed on a galvanized metal post, placed on a post that is already there, or fastened to a tree that is in the cemetery. The main object of this project is to identify and preserve the burial ground.

If the cemetery is in a field not beside a road, the sign should be placed at a site that best helps identify the cemetery location. The locations will be selected by the purchaser of the sign.

The SCHS will keep a record of each sign ordered to prevent any duplication. If there are any questions concerning this
project, please feel free to contact us at the Archives.
