County Records

Many records have been lost in the fires of the Scott County courthouses. Some records were saved and recopied.  Some have blanks and/or words missing and sometimes a series of dots to indicate missing words.  In some cases entire pages are missing.  When researching records prior to August, 1837, be sure to check all books, since some records are out of order.  Fox example, this happened in the County Court Order Books. Copies were found by residents of Scott County and brought to the Clerk's office at a later date and then ordered to be re-recorded.  It is necessary to study the index carefully, but if the name sought is not there, don't assume there is no record for that person.  It may be necessary for you to search the records page by page.  Further, do not limit your search to books marked for specific years. Recorded were frequently copied onto the wrong page or into the wrong book.
