About Us
![]()
The Whitley County Historical Genealogy Society was formed in 1996 with 17 at the first meeting. We met in the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 building for a while. Needing space we moved to the Rock House on the Whitley County School Campus. We was there a number of years and our Society was growing both in members and material.
Due to progress we were told we had to move. The search was on for a new location. By now our library had grown quite large so we needed a larger place.
Cumberland College let us rent the L&N depot starting in the fall. We moved to the depot in April as we had to vacate the rock building sooner then expected so the college let us move into two rooms of the depot. We were crowded but glad to have a place to move to.
In the spring of 2005 we got the rest of the depot, it had been used for storage and this and that so there was plenty of work to do. Several of the members and nonmembers went to work, doing carpentery work, painting, cleaning. After lots of hard work we was ready to move into the rest of the building.
We were very proud of our new place and of all the room we had. So a new idea came up... have a museum. Word got out and the good people of Whitley County started donating items to it. We have a good collection and still take items people donate to us. We had open house 15 October 2005 which was a great sucess. We are now Whitley County Historical Genealogy Society & Museum.
If you are ever in the area of Williamsburg, KY, stop by and visit us. We are located in the old L & N Railroad Depot on Main Street.
