The early merchants went and others came. In the early 1850's Richard Savage sold his property and went to Union county. James D. Headley, a State Senator from 1855-59, and son of William Headley, acquired the property and kept store and tavern there for more than ten years. He built an attractive front to the old dwelling of Savage. A number of his children were born there, among the number Mrs. Mary Rudy of Evansville and Mrs. James G. Gist of Providence. His oldest son, John W. Headley, born in 1841, a Civil War hero, was Secretary of State under John Young Brown, and was one of the most prominent politicians of the state in his day. Newton Headley, brother of William, and uncle of James D. Headley, represented Hopkins county in the General Assembly in 1847-48. John W. 19 m mer. clk.
KY John W. Headley was born in (then) Hopkins Co. on Feb 14, 1841. He enlisted in 1861 in Captain James K. Huey's company of Confederate cavalry, which was formed mostly of men from Webster and Hopkins Counties. This company later became Company K, 1st Kentucky Cavalry (CSA). Headley joined Morgan after their enlistment expired, and it is thought he was captured on the Ohio raid and escaped. He then became a Confederate secret agent in Canada. Headley moved to Evansville after the war and was partners in the tobacco business with Laban M. Rice (original 1st Sgt of Huey's company) and John W. Givens, who was a cousin, as was Laban Rice). Headley served as Secretary of State of Kentucky in the 1890s. He published his "Confederate Operations in Canada and the North" in 1906. Headley eventually moved to California, dying there in 1930. Charles Rice believes his wife was Mary J. Overall.
