Researching COMBS, Jonah (COOMBS, COOMES). Per tax records in Loudoun Co, VA, suspect that Jonah is the son of Samuel CO(O)MBS. Jonah is reported in Loudoun Co tax lists for 1788 as being in the household of Samuel CO(O)MBS (Samuel also appears for earlier years). The tax list for 1789 includes Samuel, but not Jonah. Believe that Jonah left Loudoun Co, VA in 1788, but this is not confirmed (Also see my query for Simon HANCOCK who left Loudoun Co in 1788). Jonah is reported in the Fayette Co "census" of 1795 and in the tax records of Woodford Co in 1796 owning 200A of 2nd class land on the Kentucky River. On Jul 5, 1800, he married Catharine (WEBB) GATEWOOD. I suspect that Jonah was married prior to his marriage to Catharine, but I am not able to prove it at this time. Where was Jonah between 1788 (Loudoun) and 1795 (Fayette). A Jonah COMBS is reported in Shelby Co, KY 8/25/1800 and a Jonah COMBS is listed as a grantee per 600A of land in Henderson Co, Ky on Grave Creek. Date of survey: 11-13-1802; Book 20,

Researching HANCOCK, Simon (and SMITH, BARTLETT). Suspect that Simon married Mary SMITH of Loudon Co, VA probably 1765-88. Simon is reported in Loudoun Co tax lists for 1786-88 (maybe also 1765-85). 1788 included one male in Simon's household named Samuel. Believe that Simon left Loudoun Co, VA in 1788, but this is not confirmed. Simon is reported in the tax records of Woodford Co in 1791-94 owning 120A on Dry Run Creek. In 1795-97 he is reported as living in Franklin Co still owning the same property (this may be because of the creation of Franklin from Woodford). The 1794 Woodford Co tax list indicates 2 white males over 16yrs. Suspect these are Samuel and William. Simon is listed in Woodford Co tax records again in 8/1800. In 1796, Simon of Franklin Co. married Martha "Patsy" BARTLETT of Woodford Co. Where was Simon between 1788 (Loudoun) and 1791 (Woodford).

I am searching for information on John Calhoun Duvall, born October 17, 1850 in Kentucky. He died June 12, 1942 in Kansas and was married to Elizabeth Creecraft in Kansas. He came to Kansas in 1876. The story my mother relates is that he was a gentleman of the old school and that his parents (names unknown) had died and he and his brother William were raised by a Dr. Black. His death certificate shows he was born in Lexington but we have been unable to confirm this and other family members believe that to be incorrect. Any informa- on this would be greatly appreciated as I have been unable to find anything to proceed with for over a year now. Thank you. Donna E. Irwin dirwin@media-net.net
