James was the son of John B. Markham, an early landowner of Bienville Parish and his wife Sara E. Upshaw,
and grandson of John Upshaw, also a one-time resident of Bienville Parish.
Sara was the sister to James Upshaw, who was the sheriff of Bienville Parish around that time.
