Brittain Cemetery
Located
in LaSalle Parish, but with old ties to Catahoula--this cemetery is placed
on this site to the diligence of Forrest Cook and Maude
Ann Gilmore.

Directions: From Summeville on LA Hwy 127, take LA Hwy. 503 past
Nickel to the junction of LA Hwys. 126 and 503. At that junction, take a left
(opposite 126) on gravel road for approximately 3/4 mile, thence take the right
on Buck Creek Road for approximately 1 1/2 miles. At that point, there will
be a backward Y, take the Y back for 1/4 mile, cemetery at end of the road.
The cemetery is at the following coordinates: 31-50-26N and 92-03-15W or Latitude:
31.84056, Longitude: -92.05389. Located in the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section
15, T10N - R4E. And at the junction of Buck Creek Road and the cemetery Y is
located the home place of Luraney (Brown) Brittain where she homesteaded the
40 acres.

and son-in-law, Aminda (as given in census) and W. A. Britton (again, as listed
in census). In 1880 Luraney is still in the household of daughter Arminda A.
and W. A. Brittain (different spelling than that of 1870).]

Note: The only date visible on the grave marker appears to be 1905. It is unclear
if this is a birth or death date. If a death date, this Robert Barnett may be
the son of Americus Barnett and his first wife. The U. S., Louisiana, Avoyelles
Parish census record for 1870 lists a three-year-old Robert in the household
of Anie (as indexed by Ancestry.com) Barnett. Viewing the image shows the possibility
that the name of the head of household is "Ami". The 1880 census for
4th Ward, Catahoula Parish lists a thirteen-year-old Robert in the household
of Marcus [Americus] Barnett.
