Colonel John Fitzpatrick Payne, 48, who died suddenly yesterday morning while on duty in his office, in the Pentagon building at Washington. Colonel Payne had not previously complained of being ill, according to his wife, the former Catherine Edgerton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E. Otis Edgerton. A native of Natchitoches, where his father was the late Sheriff Payne, he had been in the Air Corps service for 21 years, having seen duty in World War I and World War II. He was graduated from Kelly Field in the same class with Colonel Charles A. Lindberg. He later left the Air Corps to live in Tallulah for three years where he was engaged in the cotton dusting business. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a graduate of Northwestern State College, La., and of Natchitoches High School, also a Mason and a Shriner. Survivors are: his wife, one son, John William Payne, a student at George Washington University, and two brothers, William and Ed, both of Natchitoches. La.
