Colonial Ancestor: Pierre Lanoux

(Submitter: Judith Lanoux Hamner Smith)

1. Pierre Lanoux

Residence: 1766-1817 St. James Parish, Louisiana

Evidence: "Militia -- Verret’s Company -- Cabahannocer, Census of the Acadian Coast -- 1769, Census of Acadian Coast -- 1777," in: Lillian C. Bourgeois, Cabanocey: The History, Customs and Folklore of St. James Parish (Gretna, Louisiana:Pelican Publishing Co, 1957), Appendix, p. 161, 177, & 185.

Birth: c.1747 (place unknown, probably Acadia)

Evidence: A record of the birth of Pierre Lanoux has not been located. His age in the 1769 census is given as 22 and in the 1777 census as 30. This yields a birth near 1747. An age of 72 at death in 1817 yields a birth near 1745. The 1747 date is probably more accurate since it was based on much earlier records. The age at death seems to be commonly inflated in the Church records.

Burial: 19 July 1817 Convent, St. James Parish, Louisiana. Age 72, native of Acadia

Evidence: Burial of Pierre Lanoux, Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records, Vol. 3 (1804-1819) (Baton Rouge: Diocese of Baton Rouge, 1982), p. 519 (citing SMI-8,30).

Marriage to: Catherine LeBlanc, c.1770 probably in St. James Parish, Louisiana

Evidence: No record of the marriage has been located in the Church records of the Baton Rouge or New Orleans Dioceses. Civil Records of St. James and Ascension parishes have also been searched. The date can be closely bracketed, but the place can only be guessed at.
Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records, Vol. 2 (1770-1803) (Baton Rouge: Diocese of Baton Rouge, 1980), p. 454. Children of Pierre Lanoux and Catherine LeBlanc were presented for Baptism in 1771, 1773, 1775 & 1777, indicating that the couple was married by 1771.
"Census of the Acadian Coast -- 1769," in: Lillian C. Bourgeois, Cabanocey, Appendix, p. 177, #130. Pierre Lanoux is living alone and is presumably unmarried.

2. Simon Lanoux

Evidence of Relationship to #1: Succession of Catherine LeBlanc, widow Pierre Lanoux, Probate File #163, St. James Parish Clerk of Court, Convent, Louisiana. Simon Lanoux is named as the son of the deceased Catherine LeBlanc.

Roman Lanoux is named among the heirs of Felicite Mirre, deceased wife of Simon Lanoux, born of her marriage with said Simon Lanoux.

Birth: 7 August 1806

Evidence: Baptism of Romain Lanoux, Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records, Vol. 3 (1804-1819), p. 519 (citing ASC-5,266).
