The father of Dr. L.A. Meraux, Jules Meraux, is stated to have come to America
in 1854 from Salin Jura, France. Is there more than one Meraux family in St.
Bernard? Is Joseph Meraux, the banker/land owner in St. Bernard Parish who
died several years ago also of this family? If so, from which one of Jules
Merauxs male children would Joseph Meraux descend from? Beside Dr. L.A. Meraux
(who married but had no children), which one of the male children, Phillip,
Charles, or Claude Jules, would Joseph Meraux descend from. Any information

Seeking information on my grandfather, 1883-1957, who came to the New Orleans
area from France in 1896. His name apparently was Francois Pierre Ducasse,
although his Social Security application is listed as Ducassi. As a young
man he ended up in East Teas, married, and lived there under the name Frank
P. Simmon. My family believes he had a first cousin named Anita Meraux, wife
of L.A. Meraux of St. Bernard Parish, whose maiden name was Maumus, according
to the Meraux on-line biography. He was thought to have another cousin or
relatives named Claverie in New Orleans. I believe my grandfather was from
Tarbes or some other locale in Hautes-Pyrenees. My goal is to confirm his
real name, his place of birth and hopefully obtain some information on his
family in France. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of
the above families.

I'm Looking fro info on a Leonie Nunez born 1842 in Shell Beach, Louisiana
she married Valentine Mauterer of Oteghiem, Germany. Shell Beach is on a today
map, could this be the same area.
I did see that the Parish had some Nunez in their 1830 Cen.
I was told my husband's line came from the Canary Islands and was on the
ship of soldiers that came to New Orleans, LA. I'm searching for the parents
of Joseph Suares Solar who married Thomasa Doncel. They were born in Spain,
probably the Canary Islands. Their son: Joseph Clemente Solar was born 9 July
1810 in Assumption Parish, Louisiana.
And, can anyone please tell me if New Orleans was in St. Bernard Parish in
the 1700s.

I am trying to find the marriage record of my great-grandparents Pierre
Puyau and Marianne Prongue. At one time they lived on Bienvenue St. on the
New Orleans side of the Jackson Barracks. I think they were married around
1859 or 1860. They are no New Orleans marriage records for them. It has been
suggested to me they may have been married in St. Bernard (I do know that
their son was married there in 1889). How would I go about finding this informaion?
I grew up near Ellen Cemetery and have always wondered about it's origins.
I have heard that it was once a slave cemetery. Does anyone know anything
about the history of this burial ground?

Would like information on the Cieutat Family. Victor Cieutat lived in St
Bernard and was a witness at the wedding of Lapeyre Durand and Jeanne Verges
in 1856. Also, there is a Judge Victor Cieutat listed in the marriages and
deaths in the St. Bernard Voice Newspaper 1903-1905. I believe that Jeanne
Verges' (or possibly de Verges) mother was a Cieutat. This is a brick wall
for me.

Julia Deffes and she married Lloyd Alfred Cockran. Her parents' names are
Mary Madeline Miller Deffes and Romain Deffes. They resided in Arabi. Any

I have a death certificate of an African American that was born 1900, died
1945 in St. Bernard Parish. His death certificate states he was born in Childvellery,
Lousiana, as well as his parents.. Does any one know where this is/was?. Is

I am trying to find some information on Ora Deerfoot. She lived in NM until
her husbands death in 1966. Friends say she moved to Mississippi to live with
a sister. I found on the SS Death Index that she died on Jan. 10, 2001. Her
last address was Arabi, Saint Bernard, LA. Do you know the name of the local
newspaper ? Maybe I could find an obit. in it.

Just wanted to know if any marriage records survived the hurricanes?? If
so, my parents eloped in Oct 1933 from New Orleans, and I believe that St.
Bernard would have been the most likely place for them to go. Any suggestions
as to what I need to do. I cannot find anthing on them, except census when

great, great, great grandfather Antonia Aguillard married to Francisca Rodriguez.
They were Spanish immagrants in the late 1700's from Tenerife, Canary Islands.They
died in St. Bernard Parish. They had at least one son named Joseph, who died
in Pointe Coupee Parish in 1814. I have searched the Canary Islanders of La.
by Gilbert Din and found nothing. Any ships logs, date of births, date of
deaths, occupations etc. would be appreciated.

I found my gg grandpa had died in a New Orleans hospital, in 1865 – I have
put in hours looking around, enough to know there was the Charity Hospital
& then the Hotel Dieu –
I did finally receive my ancestors CIVIL WAR PACKET – and it said he died
in a BARRACKS HOSPITAL - #34….New Orleans He is buried in CHALMETTE
Can you refer me to someone who might know anything about a BARRACKS HOSPITAL
– or do you think these were just hospitals set up in the middle of their
Union camps?
Finally I mentioned he is in CHALMETTE CEM & I have found his names on the
records for that cemetery – but his civil war papers say MONUMENT CEMETERY
Did they move people from Monument to Chalmette or did the name change – what
can you tell me or where can you refer me?

In a privately published Downing family history book we have: "THE DOWNINGS
by Ralph V. Downing, pg 34): "John Downing does not appear to have prospered
after leaving Virginia. His father's will indicates that he had to pay his
debts. After leaving Kentucky he took the family to Columbus, Ind. He was
a carpenter at times at least and made flatboats for use in freighting down
the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans. There is the tradition that he made
about nineteen trips. On the last trip he contracted cholera and died at Mills
Point, La. on June 24, 1833. The family later moved to Martinsville, Ind.
and the children drifted to Illinois, Iowa and Texas. They kept some touch
with the rest of the family in Kentucky and one letter remains written by
John's brother Armstead and wife to his widow which will be of interest."
We have been unable to find a Mills Point in St. Bernard Parish. Was there
ever such a place? We are wondering if the handwriting was diciphered incorrectly
and the place was Wills Point. But, was Wills Point - that is now in Placquemines
Parish - ever in St. Bernard Parish?"

looking for a Pedro Gonzales and Maria who had a daughter named Emma. Pedro
and Maria were imigrants. Emma was born in Louisiana in 1864 or 1865, married
Benjamin Evans and died April 1940 in St Bernard. I am looking for descendants
of any of their children except Carmella (that is my line). The descendants
that I am looking for are Ramon/Raymond and Jennie Evans, Peter and Josephine
Evans, Katie Roberts (Evans), Seraphine (Evans) and Andrew Anglada, Alice
(Evans) and Patrick Kelly, James and Eva (Campo) Evans, James Evans, Leon
Evans, Hannith/Jennie Evans, Daniel Evans, Vincent Evans, Marco Evans, Joseph
Evans, Edward and Lilly (Marrero) Evans, Marie/Mary (Evans) Campo. All of
the Evans listed above were children of Benjamin Evans and Emma Gonzales.
I am also looking for more information on Benjamin's parents. I know that
he and his widowed mother moved to the area from Mississippi. Her name was
Sarah and she remarried a Judge William Prescott. Benjamin went by the name
Cunee/Coonee. He was born 20 January, 1855 in Mississippi, married 5 April,
1880, and died 31 October, 1926 in St Bernard. Most of this family were fisherman
at one time, if not all of the time. Even Katie made nets for a company in
the area that sold them. A lot of them lived on Delacroix Island and I don't
know what records are left. If anyone has information on any of these lines

I am interested in the history of a home located on Bayou Road in St. Bernard.
It was an islenos cottage built of old bargeboard. It was owned by my grandparents,
Ranton and Mary Brouillette. It burned down and the hurricane finished it
off. I know they bought the house from Roger Puig and it was once owned by
Gabreil Perrera. I heard it was once a school house. There were also rumors
of a murder in the house. If anyone has any information on the history of
