We will be collating the quarterly beginning at noon on Thursday, May 27, 1999. We need everyone's help.At the April meeting, our secretary, Sheila Rodrigue, gave us a good account of her successes in using the new experimental web-site for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon church). They are well known for their extensive collection of genealogical data, so this site has been eagerly expected for some time. Sheila filled some large holes in her family tree by using their Ancestral File which is now on line. She explained that one must still check sources and look for evidence, but it does provide a good starting place. The International Genealogical Index, or IGI, leads one to primary sources and is valuable for that reason, she said. If you would like to experience it, yourself, go to <http://www.familysearch.org/> and see for yourself. It is great, even if it has the following warning: "Due to test requirements, the site may be unavailable at times or experience periods of slow response."
We have arranged for Christopher G. Peña, the author of Touched
By War; Battles Fought In The Lafourche District to come to
the May meeting to discuss his book. Try not to miss it if your interest
is in the Civil War, or if you have ancestors who were touched by it --
especially in the surrounding area. A quote from the book jacket: "In this
thoroughly researched and authoritative study, Christopher Peña
examines for the first time the role of the state militia of Southeast
Louisiana during the war."

Every year we offer a series of "Newspaper Deaths" books for special orders. A few individuals and libraries order these books for research. Recent issues do not appear in our list of books on hand, and must be ordered and paid for before publication. This year they will be printed at the end of May. They are the 1998 Houma Courier Deaths, 1998 Comet Deaths, Engagement and Births, and the 1998 Houma Courier Engagements and Marriages. All orders must be paid for before May 31. Price to be determined.
This year we will be printing an Index to Newspaper Deaths 1981-1998 on July 1. As above, this is a special printing and orders must be paid for ahead of printing. Write to the society at the address in the heading on page 1, or call our Corresponding Secretary Jess Bergeron (no collect calls, please).
If you ordered a copy of the 1880 census of Lafourche as a pre-publication
order, you should have received it by now. If not, please let Jess know
as soon as possible. See the heading for his address.

Several people have inquired about the Girouard family reunion. There will be a reunion of the descendants of Eutile Girouard on Sunday, 6 June 1999 at the home of Louise Hebert and Ron & Diane Brown, on the old home property. The location is off LA State Hwy 92, approximately 6 miles south of Hwy 167 and less than a mile north of Hwy 700 in the rural Vermillion Parish village of Indian Bayou. If you need more information call (318) 893-5324. I got my information from Rachelle Brown whose e-mail address is <email@example.com>
Brian Quick, 30620 Blueberry Ridge Dr., Bulverde, TX 78163, is trying to locate Mary Jane Siracusa, who organized the Giroir reunion at Morgan City in 1993 and was supposed to be the contact person for the CMA reunion of the Giroir/Girouard family. Brian is also interested in Bill Giroir's book. If anyone can help him, he would appreciate it, I'm sure.
