MINERALS IN TERREBONNE PARISH
Terrebonne Parish is the state's number two producer of
natural gas and condensate and ranks second
in condensate production, fourth in crude oil production,
and seventh in casing head gas production, all
of which means money in the pocket to local and state
government and citizens alike. Production figures
for 1990: crude oil, 5,280,043 barrels; natural gas,
147,154,008 mcs; condensate, 3,592,934 barrels; and
casing head gas, 6,555,081 mcs.
About 70% of Terrebonne's work force is employed either
directly or indirectly in the mineral industry -
exploration or production of petroleum or natural gas,
in marine towing companies, shipyards, dry
docks, machine and welding shops, in the offshore food
catering business, etc.
The first natural gas produced in Terrebonne was around
1920 by a locally owned company at Lirette
Field and was still producing in 1990. This gas supplied
the City of Houma for several years until salt
water in the well forced them to shut down. The City
of Houma has five producing wells.
The underground sources of oil in Terrebonne are miocane
and pliocene formations. Average
production depths range from 10,000 to 12,000 feet with
some shallow production from 2,000' to 4,000'
depths and miscellaneous production from various depths
between these figures. The first oil production
in Terrebonne Parish was brought in at the Lake Barre
and Lake Pelto fields in 1929. Caillou Island
field, discovered in 1930, is the largest producing field
in Terrebonne Parish. Terrebonne Parish
collected $27,198,953.10 in severance taxes for 1989-1990.
