COMPANY K
LOUISIANA DRAGOONS

This company was organized in October 1861 with men mainly from Catahoula Parish, under the leadership of William L. Ditto and ordered first to travel by steamer to Memphis TN; from there by train to Nashville TN. From there the men rode to Bowling Green KY and went into winter quarters. When Bowling Green was evacuated early in 1862, Company K went with the other Confederates to Nashville.

They participated in a skirmish near Nashville, driving the enemy back. They next saw action in early April at the Battle of Shiloh as well as participating in skirmishes in northern Alabama.

During the summer of 1862, the company reported to Kingston TN, skirmishing along the way. They were part of the Siege of Mumfordville that fall, and were present at the Battle of Murfreesboro.

The winter months of 62-63 found the men in and around Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. They saw hard fighting in the Battle of Chickamauga in Sept of 1863. November found them in the Battle of Missionary Ridge and the wintered at Dalton GA.

In April of 1864, the men received orders to report to the District of Southwest Mississippi and East Louisiana. They were unsuccessful in an attack on an enemy stockade south of Port Hudson. By June, they were on the move to Vicksburg MS and met the enemy in July.

Returning to Louisiana, they were involved in skirmishes at Doyal's Plantation in August and at Thompson's Creek in October. However, moving to Liberty MS, they were pushed out of the area to raid the areas from Baton Rouge LA to Pascagoula MS.

The men of Company K, surrendered with their regiment 5 May 1865 near Gainsville Alabama.
