General Jean Jacque Alfred Alexander Mouton was born at Opelousas Louisiana on 18 Feb 1829, the son of ex-Louisiana Governor and United States Senator, Alexander Mouton. He was brought up in the french tongue and learned how to speak English only as a young man.

Mouton received an early education in the schools of the Lafayette community and then in their Vermillionville Louisiana community too. He went on to graduate with his 1850 West Point class.

General Mouton died in 1864.
