The William Walker Chapter #976, United Daughters of the Confederacy, was originally chartered 17 April 1906 in Winnfield. The chapter disbanded after remaining active more than 50 years. Now, in this the 100th year anniversary of the original charter, we are extremely proud and excited to have been issued a new charter on 24 May 2006. We feel deeply honored to be able to reorganize this historic old chapter and look forward to continuing the work started by those dear ladies of 1906.

Lt. Col. William Walker was the second sheriff of Winn Parish and was holding that office at the time War was declared in 1861. He was also Worshipful Master of Eastern Star Masonic Lodge in Winnifield, aided in the organization of the Montgomery Masonic Lodge (south Winn at the time), and served as District Deputy Grand Master of Masons, a very high Masonic honor. This 29-year-old Winn Parish leader assumed the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of Gray's 28th Louisiana Infantry 17 May 1862, and served in that capacity until 8 April 1864 when he was killed at the Battle of Mansfield. Military records for him, like many others, are few. A search in national and state archives, as well as Booth's records reveals little. But, he is referred to gallantly in many accounts of the Battle of Mansfield, falling in the charge at about the same time as did General Mouton.
