Ceylon Photo Album #5 – Stamps and more Galle pics

Ceylon Stamps depicting the Galle Lighthouse (left) & Dondra Lighthouse (right)

Galle Burgher Tennis buffs, 1925, from Norah Roberts’ book

Shows Charles de Vos’ father, Galle attorney Dick de Vos, standing at back, 5th in from left. Prof. Lyn Ludowyk, later eminent in Academia, is standing immediately to the left of Dick de Vos in the picture. In his memoirs of childhood in Galle Fort, Ludowyk mentions that Dick de Vos was a fine tenor. Norah Roberts mentions that Dick de Vos later committed suicide by drinking poisoned arrack!

Guests at the NOH, Joe Simpson (left), Charles de Vos, son of Dick de Vos in photo immediately above (one of the last Galle Fort Burghers facing the camera in the center), Dai Churcher (Engineer, teaching at Amparai, next with back to the camera), & Gamini Karunanayake (NOH, extreme right)
