Farewell
to
the
The Dean
Ismail Siblings
From
1983
to
2007
Flight
of eight swans to the heavenly shores ………………………. My
tribute to the 8 siblings that comprised my dad’s
family.
1983
…………… A
dull and rainy day upon returning from school was whisked
away
to Mt. Lavinia to the
announcement
that Zain Uncle had died that day. Zain Uncle or Bada Zain was my father’s eldest brother – the eldest
of 8
siblings born to M.S.D (that’s what my grandfather was known as) and Hanoon Ismail. He was a larger than life figure
and I
picture him just like that. A booming voice, large house full of dogs
(his
prize winning Golden Retrievers, Labradors and the occasional
Spaniel) and all the
paraphernalia, memorabilia and the stuffed leopards, the
hallmark
stone studded pillar in the middle of his hall and the billiards room.
The
eternal smell of good food , the huge
cauldron of soup
he made himself with everything and nothing put in. Faithful Selvaraj, hovering around. My memories are vague
of him and
though we did not have a very close relationship with him, I
do remember
him for getting me the most beautiful (at least in the eyes of a five
year old)
hand embroided and smocked blue
dress done
painstakingly by the Nuwara Eliya
Franciscan nuns. I remember the busloads he took to Kataragama
and where he conducted a feast at the mosque, the mountains of rice the
thousands of people who came for the feast……. For the chocolates and
visits to
the Mt. Lavinia beach, and
for buying
me my first “Lamb Chops and Shari” book from the Mt. Lavinia
Hotel bookshop. For all the stories some tall and surreal and some
unbelievable…….. about the Maharajas who he knew, the counts from
Italy, the
Lords from England, to the politicians of the 60’s and 70’s who were in
and out
of his house, the actors and actresses of yesteryear, the
socialites
and butterflies who availed freely of his lavish entertainment, his
sojourns
and wild life expeditions personified his vibrant personality. His
offspring
come in the form of Randa, Nuzath,
Rajiha ,
Hani , Sufi (though we knew him as Shamsdeen
as kids)
and of course little Niszreena (though not
little
now) and are now scattered all around the world. This grand
old gent
of Mt. Lavinia – Hotel road is still
spoken of though
he has been gone over 27 years and that’s how he will be
remembered……………………
1985 ………….. just after my A/Level and
in preparation of my Law Entrance Exam (though I could not sit for it
that year
as the release of A/Level results got delayed ) came the a real shock
one
gloomy October morning. Sithy Haleema
Dean Ismail or Aunty Baby as she was popularly known, the youngest of
my dad’s
siblings succumbed to an asthma attacked. She was the favourite
of all the siblings. Fair, bright, bubbly, far ahead of the times and
utterly
unconventional, she was the epitome of what a straightforward human
being
should be. Unmarried though not of choice, she didn’t let this deter
her
quality of life and showered her love on the offspring of siblings. Be
it toys,
sweets, books or just advice or time, we were showered with tons of it.
Me, in
particular was left in her care from the age of five when Dad had to be
based
out of Colombo, and her qualities and habits (and some say her
looks) have
been etched in me. She had a quick fire temper, but her goodness over
shone. Be
it stories about Shirley Temple or the imaginary characters Tina, Lina ,
Ronnie and Tony kept us enthralled. Her dreams of finding me a tall,
handsome
foreigner when I grew up, her concocting delicious dishes, her
uninhibited
faith in the Oneness of the Almighty and moving away from the
conventional
beliefs practiced by relatives have all been deeply imprinted in me.
Her love
of movies, songs, and community living have made its permanent impact
in me and
I can write books and books about my this particular aunt and eventhough its over
22 years since
she left us, I still miss her sooooooooooooooo
much.
I am sure she would have been thrilled with every single achievement I
made, of
the babies Imara and I have
,
of Imara’s success in the shop. Her time
with us was
too short and too soon and I am sure what I have become today is partly
what
she moulded me to be. I may never be as
generous or
whole hearted or straight forward as she was, but I know thanks to her
I have
learnt to think out of the box and I am so glad she was once such an
important
part in my life
1988…………… 4th August and we were
preparing for my birthday due the next day, but a call in the early
morning
just about shattered all the plans. My uncle Nizam
had passed away peacefully in his sleep, though he had been ailing for
a while.
Just like uncle Zain, we did not have a
one to one
relationship, but in his own way Uncle Nizam
made his
impact in my life. His wit is what I will always remember him by. His
devotion
to his wife , Jenitha
Aunty
and his two children Nijath and Duraid
was exemplary and inspite of his limited
means, he
just about gave the best he could. His visits home and the games of
scrabble or
cards we used to play or him bugging me (when I was older) of how I
used to
pester him to bring his children home do bring nostalgic memories.
His
knowledge on gems cannot be questioned. His house was an open home for
the
family and he was a mine of information for all the people who knew him.
1993………… in March my aunty Ina,
succumbed after a bravely borne battle with cancer. She was Dad’s
2nd sister and was the epitome of mischief in her youth. Stories
of her
pranks and actions are legendary. She was known also for her culinary
skills,
though she did confide in me that shortly after marriage she didn’t
even know
to boil rice, though she sharpened her skills
subsequently. Her naughtiness and unpredictable
actions, have
been inherited by her elder son Evin,
while Turney her younger son is the
complete antithesis of her.
My, spending the weekends with her and her cooking my favorite meal of
string
hoppers and her extra special beef and potato curry all specially for
me. The
walks down Sulaiman Avenue, chats with
the Dassanayake’s and Anil Uncle, trying
to calm down Kawshi the dog down the road.
Her acts of generosity
towards the slum dwellers in the area have borne fruit today and her
patronage
of the Jawatte mosque is still spoken
about the
people of the area.
1994………………
Shortly
before
my
first
wedding anniversary , we bid adieu to my
Uncle Omar, a
reputed bird watcher and animal lover. His bald head and
light eyes
and the color of his skin made one often ask if he was a foreigner, the
looks
which both his sons Alaudeen and Mohiyadeen
have inherited. He was an avid bird watcher and knew all the names
habitats and
just about everything on birds. The story that I was named after a bird
name “Shama” was a standard joke between
us, and some time before
his death he spotted a Shaheen Falcon
nesting on top
of the Ocean View building and would spend most evenings trying to spot
the
bird. His knowledge on the subject enthralled all who knew him and even
though
in the scores of this material world he would be in the bottom rank,
amongst
the nature lovers and those a tuned to the natural habitat he surely
will be
amongst the highest. His utter devotion to my dad and the long hours
they spent
in each other’s company in spite of the vast difference in their
intellect and
likes, sometimes keeps me in awe even today.
1998………….
November ,
and Aunty Fatty (or Fatima) passed away peacefully in her sleep. I
remember her
always with the prayer books and the thasbi
(rosary) . Her youth
had been a
colourful one , where she was totally
involved in
politics and business, but in her latter
years she
took to prayers and religious devotion. A cook par excellence she was
known for
her puddings and pickles, which she did on a commercial scale during
the latter
part of her life. She was plump in her youth hence her pet name
, but I don’t remember that and a socialite who had adorned the
fashion
pages during her younger days. A not so rosy marriage that endured a
hard life
for her and add to that with her only child deciding on her own course
of life
contrary to our beliefs and values, did make her bitter and turn to
religion
and spirituality and she passed away in a serene state, inspite
of the many illnesses and hardship she bore during her earthly
life
2001……………….
October
19th…..
the saddest day in my life.
It was good bye to Daddy – Izzadean
Mohamed Ismail, the most wonderful human being
anyone can come across. Words don’t justify and words will not express
what I
felt, feel and will feel about him so the words “saddest day in my life
and the
most wonderful human being “ just about
sums him up
2007
….. January 15th .
After 3 nights in a coma, the 6th of the 8 Dean Ismails
and the last survivor bid farewell to earth. Unmarried by choice, her
life was
what I would say was devoted to her parents, siblings and their
offspring. Her
patience, her way of covering up all the misdeeds of those she loved
are her
hallmark qualities. An Elvis Presley fan in her younger days
, she too became the teller of many tall tales for the
youngsters
specially Taahera, Mikhail and Danyaal
in the last days of her life. And they in return do miss her to bits
and in
their tiny ways rebel at her passing away.Unlike
the
rest of her sisters, she was no cook – and delighted in telling that
she didn’t
even know to make an omelet, but she was a food taster par excellence
and a
collector of sweets. She loved any type of sweets and had bags of
biscuits and
sweets at any time for the “kids”
Its
difficult to sum up this jotting.
So I just leave it saying that the 8 siblings must be now having a good
jaw
amongst each other and in the company of their parents in heaven. May
Almighty
Allah grant all of them Jennathul Firdous!
