Sri Lanka Burgher/Sinhala Family Genealogy
De Saram - Family #3126
A De Saram family of Dutch and Malay ancestry has Sinhalised itself since the late 18th century. It was also the easiest route to Sinhalisation as the peasant community was widely dispersed, still unstructured and without inter-community networks or leaders.
The first notable ancestor of the De Saram family was an interpreter who accompanied the Dutch Embassy to Kandy 1731 – 1732. Despite his advanced age of 71 years, this early De Saram had to make the entire journey by foot. From there, the De Saram family progressively gained power and position by loyalty, switching religions from Dutch Protestantism to British Anglicanism and benefiting from the preference of British rulers to appoint individuals loyal to their rule to high positions. This fact can be seen across the board amongst many notables belonging to all the communities in Sri Lanka.
The De Saram family was given increasing patronage and chiefly appointments and it grew in power and influence during the British period.
The De Saram family eventually had a strong and exclusive circle of relatives who were Mudaliyars by the late 19th century. Later, through marriage alliances the family extended to the Obeysekere, Dias-Bandaranaike, Ilangakoon, de Alwis, de Livera, Pieris, Siriwardena and Senanayake families.

This is Christoffel de Saram Wanigasekera Ekanaike, subsequently 4th Maha Mudaliyar. He was the son of Domingo de Saram Wanigasekera Ekanaike Attapattu Mudaliyar and his wife Dona Petronella. Domingo had 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Dominga, and 3 daughters, Gertroyda, Juliana and Francina. The last daughter married Don Lodewyk Mohandiram of Salpita korale, that is Fonseka Mudaliyar. Gertroyda seems to have married a Samarakoon Mudaliyar while Juliana Sophiya married Don David Dias Bandaranaike.

Kt Commander of the most distinguished order of St Michael and St George, Horogolla Walauwwa, St Thomas' College Mohandiram 1882, Mudliyar Siyane Korale Notes for SIR DON SOLOMON DIAS ABEYWICKREMA JAYATILLEKE SE:
He became famous in the service of successive British governors. He has recorded an account of his intimate associations with kings, princes, dukes and governors and men and women distinguished in various orders of chivalry, in his autobiography Remembered Yesterdays. But unfortunately his book does not make us any the wiser about his own family story.
With remarkable extravangance of language he styled himself Sir Don Solomon Dias Abeywickrema Jayatilleke Senewiratna Rajakumaruna Kadukeralu Bandaranaike, Knight Commander of the most distinguished order of St. Michael and St. George.
