De Saram - Family #3126

There is reason to believe that there are two de Saram families. One family a Sinhalese family which took the name de Saram, and probably the original name would have been Gankanda Arachchi  (de Saram family 1). The founder of the second de Saram family seems to be Domingo de Saram Wanjgasekera Ekanaike (de Saram family 2).

De Saram family 2 seems to have married to Dutch and British families. However both these families have also inter married, and some married to other Sinhalese families. Gankanda arachchi de Saram family may have lived close to Galkissa. Because there are two Walauwa's (mansions) of the de Saram's built around the year 1800 in present day Mihindu Mawatha Galkissa. (Dehiwela). . (Udaha Walauwa-1800 and Galkissa Walauwa-1820. )

De Saram Family 1

Alexander Wijesekere de Saram Muhandiram, Salpiti Korale b approx 1645, is the first recorded de Saram. He married the daughter of Kotalawela Don Philip Wijesiriwardhana Atapattu Mudaliyar. Colombo.

There is reason to believe that, Alexander de Saram and his son Anthonan de Saram Wirasinghe Siriwardena Mudaliyar Salpiti Korale, b 1685-1752, were actively involved in the planting of coconut at Mahawellawatte (Wellawatte) and Galkissa (Mount Lavinia).

In a Dutch internet document in internet, it says, the first village, to the south of Colombo, was Galkissa. In the time of the Governor Rijkloff van Goens (1664-1675), the village was rented for ten years, on the condition that 8000 coconut trees would be planted there over the period, and a sum of 200 rix dollars per year would be paid. (Planting agreement). In another Dutch document it says, there were in all 15, 000 coconut trees at Galkissa (234acres) and 16, 000 coconut trees at Mahawellawatte. (250acres).

It is believed that they took 4 leases and planted this 31, 000 coconut trees, and received 800 rix dollars per year for ten years.

As Alexander de Saram and Anthonan de Saram took these lands on lease and planted with coconut, they were given the option to purchase these lands in the year 1730. (Due to high maintenance cost, the policy was changed, and the land was sold to those who planted. )

In Paul Pieris's book it says Anthonan de Saram purchased a land with 16, 000 coconut trees (250 acres) at Mahawellawatte in Year 1730 for 1355 rix dollars from the Dutch Company.

Similarly it is also believed that the Galkissa land was purchased by Anthonan de Saram in 1730. Proceeds of sale of Wellawatte lands may have been used to build the Udaha walauwa in 1800 and Galkissa walauwa in 1820.

Out of the Wellawatte land, Leonard de Saram, GGS of Anthonan de Saram inheritted 75 acres. But as he did not have children, after his death his wife gifts the property to his sister's grandchildren. (Jane Rejo de Alwis and Daniel Albert de Alwis. )

Jane Rejo de Alwis who married Thomas Senewiratne inherited 25 acres at Wellawatte around the year 1900. They had 3 sons. I have seen a deed where the Senewiratne brothers (Edwin, Arthur and Jimmy) (children of Jane Rejo) sold 10 acres of Mahawellawatte land in 1930 for 2 lakhs. And the last remaining house in Rajasinghe road was sold in 1970. Similarly Daniel Albert de Alwis inherited 50 acres at Wellawatte. It is believed that they built the Samudragiri Waluwa in de Saram road, Mt Lavinia, from the proceeds of the Wellawatte land sale.

Jane Rejo de Alwis and Daniel Albert de Alwis received the above mentioned land from the wife of Leoanard de Saram. (Susana Hetroyda de Saram nee de Alwis. )

The Galkissa land I belive stretched from present day Mihindu Mawatha Dehiwela to beyond St Thomas's College Mt Lavinia.

Land in and around Mihindu Mawatha, Galkissa Walauwa, and the cemetery earlier belonged to the de Saram family, and they belonged to Leonard de Saram (1814-1880). The land in and around Hotel Road and De Saram road which belonged to the Bandaranaike family, may have earlier belonged to the De Saram family.  Land behind the Galkissa Walauwa belonged to Peter de Saram, where the Udaha walauwa has been built. He also owned several lands in Galkissa area. Daniel Albert de Alwis received the land from Galle Road to the sea, from Leonard de Saram's wife as a gift.

In 1881 it was aquired by the governtment and compensation paid, to build the Galkissa cemetery and a low income housing scheme. Daniel Albert de Alwis also got land in Mihindu Mawatha and Terrance Avenue, which later went to Leo de Alwis and Lilian de Alwis, which they later sold to their cousin Edwin Seneviratne. Lilian had one son, Terrence Senewiratne. Terrence Avenue was named after him. Leo de Alwis had his rescidence in newly built Samudragiri Walauwa in de Saram road, while the Senewiratne's lived at Galkissa Walauwa.

The land opposite the cemetery on the land side was inherited by Jane Rejo de Alwis. She gave that land to her 3 sons, but a small portion was aquired by the govt to build a chidren's park.  Around 1925 the Senewiratne brothers Edwin, Arthur and Jimmy donated one acre of land in Kawdana Road to build the Anusubodharama Buddhist Temple.  Peter de Saram lived at Udaha Walauwa. His son Christy de Saram built the Mihindu Vidyalaya School in his land from his money in 1950. In 1980, the road leading to the school was named Mihindu Mawatha. Around Yr 2005 the school was taken over by the Army and a Army camp now exists. In 1990 the fields of Peter de Saram down Mihindu Mawatha were aquired by the governtment for compensation, and they were filled and sold to build houses.

Subsequently these lands of Mahawellawatte and Galkissa were divided among Anthonan de Saram's decendents.

In the deeds of Mihindu Mawatha, there is a wording, Liyanaparangiyawatte. Meaning a Portuguese cleark, had once lived there.

The De Saram Family

The first notable ancestor of the De Saram family was an interpreter who accompanied the Dutch Embassy to Kandy 1731 – 1732.  Despite his advanced age of 71 years, this early De Saram had to make the entire journey by foot.  From there, the De Saram family progressively gained power and position by loyalty, switching religions from Dutch Protestantism to British Anglicanism and benefiting from the preference of British rulers to appoint individuals loyal to their rule to high positions.  This fact can be seen across the board amongst many notables belonging to all the communities in Sri Lanka.

The De Saram family was given increasing patronage and chiefly appointments and it grew in power and influence during the British period.

The De Saram family eventually had a strong and exclusive circle of relatives who were Mudaliyars by the late 19th century.  Later, through marriage alliances the family extended to the Obeysekere, Dias-Bandaranaike, Ilangakoon, de Alwis, de Livera, Pieris, Siriwardena and Senanayake families.

Also see Mudaliyardom and Wolfendhal by J R Weinman for references to Rev J H de Saram, the Anglican Clergyman

De Saram family of mixed origin Sinhalese itself by posing as the representatives of the masses and subsequently convinces the British rulers that they are from the Govigama caste.  The de Sarams appear to have derived their govigama identity from the Kandyan monks who staged a govigama only coup in the Kandyan Sangha in 1764.  The de Saram’s helped these Kandyan Govigama only Siyam Nikaya to establish itself in the British maritime region.

Mudaliyar Don David de Saram (b approx 1750) organizes an unprecedented Buddhist ceremony lasting a week on a flotilla on the Nilwala river in Matara and gives the govigama nikaya his full official patronage.  During this period the De Saram family gains power and position first by loyality to thr Dutch and then the British switching religions from Dutch Protestantism to British Anglicanism and collaborating with the invaders.

This is Christoffel de Saram Wanigasekera Ekanaike, subsequently 4th Maha Mudaliyar.  He was the son of Domingo de Saram Wanigasekera Ekanaike Attapattu Mudaliyar and his wife Dona Petronella.  Domingo had 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Dominga, and 3 daughters, Gertroyda, Juliana and Francina.  The last daughter married Don Lodewyk Mohandiram of Salpita korale, that is Fonseka Mudaliyar.  Gertroyda seems to have married a Samarakoon Mudaliyar while Juliana Sophiya married Don David Dias Bandaranaike.

The Maha Mudaliar married Cornelia Henrietta Scharff, sister of sister in law of Henricus Philipsz Wijekoon Panditaratne, and his children were

1.  Christoffel Petrus Geradus Mudaliyar of the Gate died before 1840.

2.  Johannes Henricus died 24th October 1858.

3.  Susana Dorothea.

4.  Johanna Petronella married 9th June 1817, Johan Paulus Perera Gunerwardena 2nd A. P. M.

5.  Cornelia married Don Solomon Dias Bandaranaike, Mudaliyar Siyane Korale.

The Mudaliyar died 28th February 1842.

Details from page 49.

Don David Dias Bandaranaike was the son of Don Conrad Maha Mudaliyar and married Juliana Sophia, sister of Christoffel De Saram, 4th Maha Mudaliyar. (as the dates dont match, may be a son of Francisco DB)

And had a daughter, Christina Pietronella baptised 29th October 1789, who appears to have married Samanakkody Mudaliyar.  He had also a son Carlo.

Many adopted Portuguese names, were often those of their sponsors at Baptism.

The word Don or Dona, first conferred by Portuguese on nobleman and women and high rank Sinhalese.  And  was later given to any person, appointed to office under the government.

By the 1630's about half of the people of the coastal regions of the South West and most of the inhabitants of Jaffna professed Christianity.  Many baptised Roman Catholics may have continued to follow Buddhist rituals in their homes, while adopting a different identity in public.

During about three quarters of a century of Dutch rule a large number of baptisms took place.  In 1718, the total in Colombo, Galle and Matara areas were 93, 165.  The vast majority converted to ensure their hold over property, the legitimacy of their children, and rights of inheritance, under the Company's administration.  People of Ceylon, straddled two identities with some ease.

Both Portuguese and Dutch Governments, made profession of Christianity a pre-requisite for government employment, and vigorously  sought conversion.  However when the British made it known, that they did not require conversion, to their form of Christianity, many Lankan  protestants changed their professed religion to Buddhism and Hinduism.

The Tombu index  was started by the Portuguese, but registration work began in the 1740's.

(In 1758 Leander de Saram MM of the Governors Gate at Colombo, the highest ranking local official was exiled to the Cape of good hope-South Africa, because he was suspected of a secret understanding with Kandy, at a moment when Dutch-Kandyan relations were in a bad state. Leander de Saram knew the workings of the Dutch Administration, to make a complaint to the higher authoritiesin Batavia, who over ruled the Colombo decision, and let him return to his native land. )After he was banished new Mudaliyar Alexander Abeyesekere Samarakoon was appointed on 6/3/1758.

Tomb at Christ Church Dehiwela (Galkissa)

Galkissa walauwa may have been built by Leonard de Saram's father, Louis de Saram in 1820. It is still standing in Mihindu Mawatha Galkissa. . And may be Leonard de Saram and Susana Hetroyda de Alwis lived there.  (After the death of Leonard de Saram, properties were inherited by Susana Hetroyda de Alwis.  As they did not have children, they were given to Leonard de Saram’s sister’s grand children. . Susana de Saram nee de Alwis gives 50 acres of Mahawellawatte to Daniel Albert de Alwis, and 25 acres of Mahawellawatte to  Jane Rajo de Alwis.  They both received properties in Galkissa, and Mihindu Mawatha, including the Galkissa Walauwa.   While staying at Galkissa Walauwa they are supposed to have built the Samudragiri Walauwa in de Saram Road Mt Lavinia. Which later was the home of Daniel Albert de Alwis.  Galkissa Walauwa became the home of Jane Rajo de Alwis who married Thomas Leonard Gunasekera Senewiratne.  Daniel Albert de Alwis and Jane Rejo de Alwis are children of Helena Eliza de Alwis. )
