County, Mass., September 18, 1859. Son of Rev. Lewis Benton Bates and Louisa D. (Field) Bates; married, July 12,
1887, to Clara Elizabeth Smith in Jamestown, New York. Republican. Lawyer; member of Massachusetts state house of
representatives, 1894-99; Speaker of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, 1897-99; Lieutenant Governor
of Massachusetts, 1900-03; Governor of Massachusetts, 1903-05; defeated, 1904; delegate to Massachusetts state
constitutional convention, 1917-19. Methodist. Member, American Bar Association; Freemasons; Odd Fellows; Beta Theta
Pi. Died June 8, 1946.
