WILLIAM HENRY BATES
Bates, William Henry (1917-1969), (son of
George Joseph Bates), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Salem, Essex
County, Mass., April 26, 1917; attended the public schools; was graduated from Worcester Academy in 1936, from Brown
University, Providence, R.I., in 1940, and from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, Boston, Mass.,
in 1947; enlisted in the United States Navy in July 1940 and served until February 14, 1950, resigning his
commission as lieutenant commander after being elected to Congress; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-first
Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, George J. Bates; reelected to the Eighty-second and
to the nine succeeding Congresses and served from February 14, 1950, until his death in Bethesda, Md., June 22,
1969; chairman, Select Committee to Conduct Investigation and Study of Benefits for Survivors of Deceased Members
and Former Members of the Armed Forces (Eighty-third Congress); interment in St. Marys Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
