National Convention from New York, 1876; U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1885-89; established the Naval War College, in
Newport, R.I.; delegate to New York state constitutional convention 7th District, 1894. Died, following appendicitis
surgery, in New York, New York County, N.Y., February 2, 1904. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y.
