Nitze, Paul
Henry (1907-2004) — also known as Paul H. Nitze — of Washington, D.C. Born in Amherst, Hampshire County, Mass.,
January 16, 1907. The son of William Albert Nitze and Anina Sophie (Hilken) Nitzen. His father was a professor of
Romance languages at Amherst College. Mr. Nitze's first wife of 55 years, Phyllis, died in 1987. U.S. Ambassador to
, 1986-89. Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. Died Oct. 19, 2004 of pneumonia at his home in
Washington, D.C. He was 97. He leaves his wife, Elisabeth Scott (Porter) Nitze; four children from his first
marriage, Peter of New York, William of Washington, Anina Nitze Moriarty of Boston and Heidi of New York; a
stepdaughter, Erin Porter of Salt Spring Island, B.C., Canada; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
