(1726-1790) — of Massachusetts. Born in 1726 Larochelle, France. Father of James Bowdoin III. Delegate to
Massachusetts state constitutional convention, 1779-80; Governor of Massachusetts, 1785-87. French ancestry. Member,
American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Bowdoin College in Maine was named for him. Died, of consumption
(tuberculosis), in Boston, Suffolk County, Mass., November 6, 1790.
