Taft, Royal Chapin (1823-1912) also known as Royal C. Taft of Providence, Providence County, R.I. Born in Northbridge, Worcester County, Mass., February 14, 1823. Son of Orsmus Taft and Margaret (Smith) Taft; married, October 31, 1850, to Mary Frances Aimington. Republican. Member of Rhode Island state house of representatives, 1880-84; Governor of Rhode Island, 1888-89; president, Merchants National Bank; president, Boston & Providence Railroad; director, New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. Died June 4, 1912 Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. Interment at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, R.I.
