At a meeting of the First Parish in Essex held this day it was voted that Caleb S. Gage be moderator and Caleb Cogswell, clerk pro tem. Voted that the parish com. be authorized to slate the front roof of the meeting house if after further examination & inquiry they are satisfied that it will be for the interest of the parish. Voted that the parish com. be authorized to draw on their treasurer for such sum or sums as may be necessary to enable them to carry the preceeding vote into effect as contemplated by the vote passed at the last annual meeting under the 7th article in the warrant for that meeting.

60February 1868 Soldier's monument.

We the subscribers hereby pledge to pay the sums set against our respective names for the purpose of erecting a Monument to commemorate the many names of the soldiers from Essex who fell in defense of the Flag in the Great Rebellion. On the condition that the town will appropriate the ground on the west side of the gate in front of the hearse house in the old Cemetery for that purpose and accept the Monument as a trust forever.

The monument is proposed to be of granite with tablets for appropriate inscriptions.

The subscriptions to be obligatory when the sanction of the Town has been obtained and a sufficient amount secured to warrant the undertaking.
