Comments about the Tax Lists
After the tax rate was set, the tax collector used a list of the amount of poll tax, real property tax and personal property taxes for each taxpayer.
A "poll" was a male age 21 or over who was eligible to vote. In some cases it is difficult to reconcile knowledge of the family members, with the number of polls taxed. Secondly, residents of Ipswich (First Parish) do not appear in the tax lists. I do not know if they were not taxable by Chebacco Parish, later the Town of Essex. It is likely that First Parish residents owned property in Chebacco/ Essex. Finally, non-residents are listed by town. Those towns included Hamilton, Gloucester, Manchester, Salem, Topsfield, and Wenham & Beverly.
Select a year from the list below to view the text files. There are two slightly different lists for 1802. They are labeled 1802A and 1802B. For 1814, there is a county and state tax list in addition to the Parish list. It is labeled 1814S. The years 1801, 1807, 1808, 1817, and 1819 are not included.
1800 1802A 1802B 1803 1804 1805 1806 1809 1810 1811 1812 1813 1814 1814S 1815 1816 1820 1821 1822 1823 1824
Table of Chebacco residents in the 1800 - 1824 tax lists
Surnames are listed with a standardized spelling. Spelling variations are listed on the line below the standard name with a letter to indicate which year that spelling was used. The standard spelling is given an assumed letter "A." On occasion, more than one spelling is used, and more than one letter will be found in the census year columns. Plural forms of the name may exist in the list, but are not given in this table, e.g. Goodhues land (without apostrophe).
The numbers in the census year columns show how many times the surname is found in each tax list. The same name may be listed more than once, especially in the 1802A list where names are repeated at the end of the list to show additional taxes or tax abatements. Also counted are references to property such as Choate's farm or Goodhues land.
NOTE: 1811 was inadvertantly placed between 1816 and 1818 in the following tables.
