DEACON OLIVER2 WATSON (MATTHEW1)13,14 was born 1718 in On boat traveling to America15, and died December 20, 1804 in Spencer, Massachusetts. He married (1) ELIZABETH BLAIR December 04, 1742. She was born 1725 in Worcester Massachusetts, and died October 31, 1779 in Spencer, Massachusetts. He married (2) HANNAH PETERS November 1782. She was born 1724 in Brookfield Massachusetts, and died March 06, 1808.Notes for D
EACON OLIVER WATSON:Oliver Watson, was born during the sea voyage of his parents from Ireland to America. He spent the early part of his life in Leicester, Massachusetts. In 1740 , he purchased a farm of about 200 acres, in the westerly part of the town, of Jeremiah Whittemore, previously owned by Nathaniel Cunningham. a wealthy merchant of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This property was included in the town of Spencer by the incorporation of the town on May 14, 1753. It is the first farm in Spencer, just over the Leicester line on the "Old Post Road", which is now the (Spencer Country Inn). Mr. Watson was a valued and influential citizen of the town in it's early growth, as the following extracts from "Draper's History of Spencer" indicates:
"A church was organized on May 17, 1744 and the same day a covenant was subscribed by by Deacon Archibald Thomas, Deacon Oliver Watson and others." The following method in 1771, was organized for the disposition of the pews; those whose valuation in real estate stood the highest had first choice of them at an appraised value. Deacon Oliver Watson ranked third in valuation. He was a deacon of the church for many years. During the agitations and struggles previous to the Revolution, there were but few post offices, and at that time it became necessary to have some confidential persons appointed in every town, to whom communications could be made with safety and effect. Hence, originated the "Committee of Correspondence". This committee was soon recognized by the Legislature as of legal and effectual authority, and important duties devolved upon them by the General Court. They were, in fact, the directors and managers of the great political drama which was in preparation for general action through the country, and we owe much to this little band of patriots who spent many anxious days and nights, who freely contributed their aid, and many of them their blood, to effect and secure themselves and their children the blessings of liberty. Mr. Watson served on this committee during the year 1775. He was chosen at a meeting of the towns of Leicester, Spencer and Paxton as one of a committee to draft instructions to their representatives. The meeting was called to take into consideration as they expressed it "the melancholy situation of our public affairs as this critical conjuncture." The inhabitants of Spencer held a meeting on July 17, 1775, and decided for the first time to assume the right of an independent town, and chose Oliver Watson as their representative. He was instructed to communicate to the General Court the vote of the town, June 24, 1776 "that should Congress think it expedient to declare the colonies independent of the kingdom of Great Britain, we do hereby freely, fully and solemnly, engage with our lives and fortunes, to support Congress in such a measure."
Mr. Watson was the representative at Congress when 'By a unanimous vote, July 4, 1776, declared the colonies to be free, sovereign and independent States". He was also representative in the years 1777 and 1780. He was selectman of Spencer in the years 1755-1757, 1760-1767, and 1771 and 1778.
He was a patriot of the Revolution and had three sons in service.

ON. JAMES DRAPER:Author of The History of Spencer. Appointed Justice of the Peace in 1810. This office then carried with it the authority to try cases. He became quite an old man and unable longer to fill the position with satisfaction to himself. In the meantime he had tried over a thousand cases. He was a delegate in 1820 for altering or amending the constitution, representative twelve years, senator two years, assessor twenty-seven years, town clerk one year, town treasurer twelve years and selectman ten years. Besides the above positions of trust of a public nature which he filled with credit he was largely employed in the settlement of estates and other legal business.

Notes for R
OBERT WATSON:He owned a farm and wire factory. The motor-power used for drawing the wire, being the old water-wheel, the water supply was from what is now know as Shaw Pond, from which Spencer now receives its supply. He at one time owned nearly all the land about the reservoir. The exact time he continued in the wire business we are unable to tell-some time before 1824 and quite a few years after, for we find a bill of sale for the use of said patent dated Nov. 20, 1824. He was to have use of said patent for fourteen years, to be used in his factory, he not to employ more than two persons besides himself, or three in all. We believe he used it full time. After selling this property for a tannery, he continued to draw wire in a building on the home farm in Leicester, on the "old post road," near the Spencer line. This property is now known as the (Spencer Country Inn), it is reported that the house had been built in 1732. In 1901 it was referred to as the "old square Watson house,"route 9 originally passed in front or south of the house, so that today the front of the house faces away from route 9. One of the brownstone "Franklin milestone" stands in front of the dwelling. Still reads, "57 miles to Boston." He was Highway Surveyor, Selectman, and a man held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was Deputy Master of the band at tached to the company of the Massachusetts Militia. The Massachusetts shield and plume which he wore in service are well preserved and prized by the descendants. There are official papers notifying him to appear for service, with his musicians, dated 1811 and 1824, and an appointment dated 1822, copies of which we insert below:
TO MR. ROBERT WATSON:
You are hereby requested to notify the musicians whose names are here under written to appear at James Draper's Inn-holder, in Spencer, on Tuesday, the 23 inst., and likewise at William Denny's, Inn-holder, in Leicester, Wednesday, the 24 inst., at both places at precisely at one o'clock A.M., and likewise to appear yourself.

CROWNED WITH GOLD
Fifty Years of Married Life
Saturday, April 30, 1892 - The Spencer Leader
Observance of the Semi-Centennial Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. O. Watson.
On Thursday afternoon and evening of this week a most interesting and memorable social event occurred at the home of one of Spencer's aged and most worthy couples. It was a fitting observance of the day which commemorated the reaching of the golden step in the ladder of married life; the placing, as it were upon the heads of this honored couple the golden crown which a half century of honest, peaceful life has earned for them. The idea of giving to this rare event the observance due originated some weeks ago among the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Oliver Watson, who for fifty years have spent their married life in this community. Some three hundred invitations were issued to friends in this town and in adjoining towns, to which more than half responded. Of those from other places were noticed Mr. And Mrs. Chas. Saddler of Hudson; Mrs. Rodman of Saugus, Mass.; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Whittemore of Uxbridge; Mrs. Eliza G. Shumway of Warren; Mr. and Mrs. Horace Warren, Mr. and Mrs. G. Warren, Leicester; Robert Only, Cherry Valley. New York friends who were expected, were unable to be present. The whole of their large house, 217 Main St. {which is now a Bed and Breakfast }was thrown open for the accommodation of the guests, and the rooms on the First floor were handsomely decorated for the occasion by Florist A.W. Hoyle.
Friends from a distance arrived during the afternoon; the town guest began to come in evening. In the front hall was stationed Miss Cora Watson who directed the guests upon their arrival to the front stairs heading to the rooms above, which were used as dressing rooms. On the second floor the guest were directed by a second usher, dressing rooms for ladies and gentlemen. Returning down stairs again the guests were presented by F. M. Prouty to the host and hostess, who stood in the parlor on the west side of the room. Both looked much younger than would seem could be possible for a couple who have seen fifty years pass over their heads since the wedding, bells first rang for them. Mrs. Watson wore over her shoulders a beautiful silk shawl which formed a part of her toilet at the original wedding; in her hand she carried the same pocket handkerchief which she carried fifty years ago, and later held also in her hand a lovely bouquet of hot-house flowers presented to her by little Wallace Watson. After a brief interim spent in social intercourse the guest were conducted to the dining room, where they were served with refreshments under direction of F.S. Eaton and his assistants. Thus throughout the evening the many guest were coming and going, tending congratulations The the honored host and hostess, enjoying for a few moments the festivities of the evening and thence departing, leaving hearty wishes that many more anniversaries of the wedding day might be allotted to the worthy couple.
A very pleasing feature of the evening, and one which added much enjoyment to the general felicity of the occasion was the music furnished by Bemis' orchestra, five pieces, which was seated at the head of the front stairs. The sweet strains of the selections pervaded every portion of the house and filled every soul with a depth of happiness well fitted for the unusual event.
About 9 o'clock there was a change in the program which Mr. and Mrs. Watson were unprepared for. It was the presentation to them two beautiful gifts, in token of the esteem in which they are held by their friends and acquaintances. Dr. E. R. Wheeler, in a very neat speech, presented the gifts- to Mr. Watson, a gold headed cane and to Mrs. Watson, a handsome French marble clock- in behalf of the many friends who had contributed to their purchase. The recipients were so greatly affected that neither could reply save that they were deeply grateful for the tokens of love.
Guests were also shown two old-fashioned oak chairs, very ancient which L.H. Dennis had gilded for the occasion, and also the little low chair in which Mr. Watson used to sit when a child. It was just 75 years old.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson are both natives of Spencer and both were Watson's before marriage, the latter being Eliza J. Watson, daughter of Chas. Watson. They were married in 1842 by Rev. Levi Packard, pastor of the Congregational church of Spencer at that time, the ceremony taking in the west room of what is now known as the Chas. Watson place. At the time of their marriage the bride was twenty-one and the groom twenty-seven, so that their ages are today, respectfully, seventy-one and seventy-seven. The bridesmaid and groomsman were Mrs. Watson brother and his wife Almira Bartlett of Killingley, Ct., who were married two days before, Mr. and Mrs, Watson standing up with the bride and groom on that occasion.
Guests were also shown two old-fashioned oak chairs, very ancient which LH. Dennis had gilded for the occasion, and also the little low chair in which Mr. Watson used to sit when a child. It was just 75 years old.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson are both natives of Spencer and both were Watsons before marriage, the latter being Eliza J. On the night of the wedding day the brass band of Spencer serenaded the couple and were invited in and served the same as the wedding party. Two members only of this band are now living- Geo. Jenks of Spencer and Wm. Bush of Worcester.
Mr. Watson brought his wife to the house which they now occupy and there have lived quietly and peacefully in the west half of the house through all the years of the last half century.

Alonzo Amasa Bemis, one of Worcester County's prominent men in professional, public, and private life, is a descendant of an old and honored English family, emigrants of which came to America and settled in the New England States, where they and their numerous offspring exerted an incalculable influence upon the growth and advancement of their several localities. To-day throughout the New England States are many hundreds who bear this distinguished patronym. The numerous Bemis families of Spencer and of Worcester County, of all descended from Joseph Bemis, the emigrant ancestor, who was born in England in 1619, and came to America while a young man, settling in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he is listed as a planter as early as 1640. He became a town officer and one of Watertown's foremost citizens, his death occurring at that place in 1684. The lineal descent goes from Joseph to John (1), to John (2), to John (3), to Abijah, to John (4), to Samuel, and to Amasa, grandfather of Alonzo Amasa Bemis.
Amasa Bemis was born in Spencer, February 25, 1831, and married Laura Pike, a native of Brookfield, and they were the parents of Edwin Amasa Bemis, through whom the line continues. Edwin Amasa Bemis, the father of Alonso Amasa Bemis, of whom this biographical record, was born on December 25, 1824, at Spencer, Massachusetts, where he spent his long life and as an agriculturist, and where he died November 27, 1887. He was married, at Spencer, in 1847, to Julia Draper Watson, who was born at Leicester on July 15, 1826, a daughter of Robert Watson, who was a descendant of an old Scotch family that at an early date emigrated to America, settling at Leicester, where scions of that patronym later became of great influence and importance. Julia Draper (Watson) Bemis survived her husband until 1908. To Edwin Amasa and Julia Draper (Watson) Bemis were born eleven children, two girls and nine boys.
Amasa Alonzo Bemis, the ninth child of Edwin Amasa and Julia Draper (Watson) Bemis, and a representative of the tenth generation of the Bemis family in America, was born at Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts, on May 2, 1864. His early education was obtained in the local public schools, following which he entered high school. In 1865 he matriculated in the Dental Department of the University of Maryland, from which institution he was graduated with the class of 1887, receiving the degree of D. D. S. After two years of study with Dr. A. A. Howland, of Worcester, before graduation, he engaged in the practice of his profession in West Brookfield, where he remained for three years. He then returned to his native city, where he opened offices and built up a large clientage, practicing with steadily increasing success in the same suite of offices for a period of thirty-six years. Recently Dr. Bemis has removed his office to a new block, built expressly by him for his dental practice, and here he continues in a profession in which he has no peer in his native county.
Politically Dr. Bemis gives his hearty support and cooperation to the Republican Party. He is a trustee of the Sugden Library, the Sugden Block, and of the Bemis Memorial Park Association, and a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society. His religious affiliation is given to the Congregational church, of which body he is a sincere member and an earnest worker.
Dr. Bemis married (first), October 4, 1887, Nellie M. Thayer, daughter of Clarke and Nancy Thayer, of Natick, Massachusetts. She died December 15, 1907, and Dr. Bemis married (second), April 8, 1911, Maud Etta Varney, daughter of Arthur W. and Cora L. (Baker) Varney, of Hermon, Maine.
Some years ago Dr. Bemis undertook the arduous task of compiling a complete and comprehensive genealogy of the Bemis family, which, with the able assistance of his mother, he brought to successful completion. This genealogy to-day stands as an invaluable historical record of a family whose members were protagonists in the upbuilding and advancement of the early colonies. Alonzo Amasa Bemis maintains his residence at No. 12 High Street, Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

ILLIAM CUTLER WATSON:From his obit- (The Spencer Leader, Sat. Feb. 10, 1900)
Landlord of the celebrated Jenks Tavern Died Last Night
William Cutler Watson died last night at apartments in the Kingsley building, aged eighty-four years, ten months, two days. Death was caused by cystitis, which trouble became serious about two weeks ago and for the past week he has been contained to his bed. It was realized for the past three days that his case was hopeless. Nevertheless Mr. Watson had insisted all day long that he was going to hear the band concert and had laid out some of his clothes ready to put them on. For years he had taken a personal interest in Spencer brass band, each year starting the petition for a town appropriation for band concerts.
Just as he breathed his last the first number of the concert was put on across the street. Had the fact of his death been made known to he members of the band they would have postponed the concert. In his earlier days Mr. Watson was a very large property owner, that section north of Main St. and west of Pleasant and Lincoln largely owned by him at one time or another.
Much of this he cut up and sold into house lots, most of the lots on Grant, Lincoln and High St. having at one time been a part of his possessions. For many years he was proprietor of the Old Jenks tavern, which was burned in 1868 while he was still proprietor. It stood where the present Massasoit hotel is located, and the house at the corner of High and Main St. was afterward built and owned by Mr. Watson.
Mr. Watson was born in Spencer, Aug. 30, 1823, and with the exception of nine years passed in New Brunswick, has lived in his native town ever since. He was the son of Capt. Otis and Harriet Watson. His mother lived to be nearly ninety years old, while his father died many years ago. Mr. Watson attended the Bond school, near Chandler Taft's and while getting his early education, he made his home with his grandfather, Abner Snow. In his younger days, he passed the grater part of his time setting cards. These cards were taken from the card factory then owned by Eliphet Trask at Mt. Pleasant to the home of the people who desired to work upon them.
When a good-sized boy, William went to live with his cousin in North Brookfield. While there he learned to peg boots that were taken to his cousin's house from the shop. Before he became of age Mr. Watson bought a small grocery store at the corner of Elm and Main St. with some money he had saved. He accumulated $600 in the few years he remained there. After sizing up the business that was being done at the Jenks tavern, he decided he would like to become proprietor of the noted inn. One day in 1853 he made a proposition to Elzear B. Draper, then proprietor of the house. As a result the tavern was bought by Mr. Watson for $2100. He then took charge and remained in the hotel business twenty years. Fire broke out one night in 1868, in the barn, and burned the barn and tavern to the ground. Seven horses, two yoke of oxen and two gray hounds, Tom and Jerry, all belonging to Mr. Watson, were lost in the flames, beside everything in the tavern. The fire was a blow to Spencer as well as Mr. Watson, as his house was known as the life of Spencer because of its merry parties within its walls. Mr. Watson sold the land two years after to Richard Sugden and Nathaniel Myrick for $12,000. When the land went into new hands, a strip of it across the front was sold for a drugstore. The remainder of the land was to be cut up for building lots. At this time there was a great demand for building lots, and the owners figured on good money being made by the new deal. Realizing what was to be done, Mr. Watson was sorry that he sold the land. After a consultation with Horace A. Grout, John L. Bush and George Grout, it was agreed to buy the land back. Myrick and Sugden, after learning what were the plans of Mr. Watson, sold back the land for 12,500. Lather it was decided to form a stock company, and in 1870 an estimate on the probable cost of building hotel Massasoit as it stands today was secured, which was $32,000. When completed the building cost $83,000. Of this amount $30,000 had to be borrowed from Spencer savings bank. Mr. Watson lived in the 80's in New Brunswick, where he owned 12,000 acres of lumber land. After retiring from lumbering in New Brunswick Mr. Watson carried on a market for a time on Wall St. But for several years he has lived a retired life, spending much of his time at the Massasoit piazzas where he was known to all. He owned and operated at one time a saw and planing mill on the site of the present E.E. Stone & Co. mill and also did a large business in cutting off woodlots years ago. He married Eleanor (Sagendorph) Watson, widow of George Watson, June 13, 1870. Mrs. Watson died nine years ago. He is survived by two children, Bertha, wife of Walter S. Wiggin, and William C. Watson Jr. of Springfield; Mrs. Harry W. Goddard of Worcester is a step daughter. The funeral will take place Sunday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Wiggin, High St. The officiating clergyman will be Rev. E. G. Zellars. It is probable that the band will take some action and probably attend the service.

Notes for H
ARRY W. GODDARD:Harry and Grace Goddard lived at 190 Salisbury Street, a house they named 'Elmarion,' linking the names of their two daughters, Eleanor and Marion. They were married in Spencer, Massachusetts in 1887, where Mr. Goddard worked for Spencer Wire Company. He began at the age of seventeen and became its superintendent four years later. The couple lived in Spencer before they and the company moved to Worcester. At first, the Goddards lived on South Main Street, and after 1905 in their newly built home on Salisbury Street across from the lot on which the American Antiquarian Society's third home would be built four years later. By then, Goddard was president and general manager of Spencer Wire Company.
Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on September 14, 1863, Harry Goddard attended public schools in Worcester through the first two years of high school. He then went to work for Washburn & Moen Manufacturing Company for two years, after which he attended Wilbraham Academy for a year. By 1917 he was also the treasurer of the Hobbs Manufacturing Company and president of the Mills Woven Cartridge Belt Company, both in Worcester. Goddard House, renamed in his honor, was his gift to the city as a Home for Aged Men. A leading manufacturer of the city, he served as president of the Board of Trade (predecessor to the Chamber of Commerce), was active in the Republican Party (hosting President William Howard Taft in his home), and served on the boards of the Mechanics National Bank and People's Savings Bank. He belonged to the Tatnuck Country Club, the Worcester Country Club, and the Commonwealth Club.
Professionally, his success was credited to his 'force of character, insight and energy His granddaughter said it more simply. 'My grandfather must have been a legendary figure in our Town He was also an 'avid collector, an avocation which began in his youth with stamps' and continued with a large collection of 'dazzling gems and precious stones that the two would look at together on special occasions.
