Town History
In 1637 residents of nearby petitioned to settle a new plantation in the
area now known as Sudbury. Though originally the home of Native Americans,
it was largely unpopulated due to a smallpox epidemic a few years before.
On September 6, 1638 the General Court issued a 5-mile land grant that
included areas currently in Sudbury, Wayland and northern Framingham.
Later that fall the first lean-tos were erected on the east side of the
Sudbury River. One year later on September 4, 1639, the General Court
incorporated the new plantation. Sudbury was the nineteenth town of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony.
