Chicopee Cemeteries Notes: The earliest cemetery was established at the foot of Elm Street in Springfield.
The "Old Burying Ground" was Chicopee's colonial cemetery on Chicopee Street (where all the Chapins are buried) -- first buried there was Miss Sarah Hitchcock in 1741.

Notes on Ashley Cemetery, above: I obtained this listing with an indication it was in Chicopee, although it is clearly located in West Springfield.
Also have heard it called "Ashleyville Cemetery" and due to its location, I suspect it may have some close ties to
Holyoke, especially considering the name Ashley and the number of early Holyokers with the same surname. This is my personal
thought only and is unverified. This listing also appears under the West Springfield cemetery listings.

Church: St. Rose de Lima, organized 1898
|
|
Burials began ca. 1910 and for several years they buried babies in an unmarked area fronting School House Road. Today there are a clump of tombstones marking baby graves, but many more infants and toddlers are buried in that area than is obvious. The church has the records of these burials nonetheless.
St. George Church (first known as St. Joachim) in Chicopee Falls, Maple Street, uses St. Rose de Lima cemetery as they both serve the French Catholic population.
Thanks to Gail Ferris for contributing this information.
Linnie Poirier has written in to report the following information:
The "Babies Section" is to the right of the entrance,
along Olsen St. (formerly called Columba Street, the Street name was changed
approximately six (6) years ago, at implementation of E-911, because Columba
Street had been cut in half in the mid to late 1950s by the building/creation
of the Mass Pike). In addition her great-grandfather was one of the earliest buried there, on Feb 14, 1912, a two year difference in prior reports of earlierst burials.
The parish now has all "occupants" of the cemetery in a computerized data
base, showing the "Section", "Plot #", age of decedent and burial date. Contact the Parish directly for this information.

The above cemetery, Precious Blood, is located on what was once known as the Granby Plains (see map), though actually not in Holyoke, it was under the control of the French Catholic church in Holyoke (Precious Blood), and may be called a Holyoke institution. It was opened for use in 1875. It contains four acres. This cemetery marks the location of the mass grave resulting from the Precious Blood fire in 1875. It is possible the cemetery may have been established as a result of that tragedy.

The Baypath cemetery at Blunt park, Springfield, Ma. is an old paupers grave
yard. A book at the Conn. Valley Historical Museum at the Quadtrangle
in Springfield, Ma. has many of the graves someone recorded. Many graves have no
names or say "box of bones", some were homeless bodies buried there. I
believe this person who recorded this cemetery, mentioned it was over run
with brush, weeds and trees. They tried to get it cleared. I don't know what
condition it is in. There is no entrance area to this cemetery that I know
of.. Hidden away..in the woods. Contributed by Roerta Cyr.

Notes: Once considered part Indian Orchard many years ago. There are no records for the
burials. The Hillcrest Park Cemetery, next to it, has control now of the
grounds.. They don't know who is buried there.
There are many graves from the middle 1800's and early 1900's. some later to
1998. Located on Parker St. right next to Hillcrest Park Cemetery on Parker St. If
you look at the map for Hillcrest, which has 2 entrances, just past the 2nd
entrance is Maplewood Cemetery..on the same side of the street.

Notes: A warm thank you to Lois Fisher who did some great detective work on this elusive cemetery.
Lois writes: "The first burying ground was dedicated in 1636 and was at the foot of Elm Street, between Water Street and the river. In 1848 the remains
and monuments were removed to the Peabody Cemetery on Pine Street. There were 2,434 bodies moved.
The Peabody merged with the Springfield Cemetary in 18??." Lois promises to share more about this cemetery's history with us when she learns about it.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
|
|
When seeking a gravesite or cemetery, please note: In the 1902 A History of Hampden County Massachusetts, edited by Alfred Minot Copeland, the author states "Previous to about three-score years ago nearly every religious society having a house of worship also had a churchyard for the burial of the dead; but after the rise of the recognized cemeteries, old customs were changed and the remains of the dead no longer were laid at rest in the church lot. A few burial places of this class are still in existence and among them mentioned may be of that in what once was called Cherry Lane, near where stood a Baptist church edifice; another is seen near the once-known Faith Chapel, on Sumner avenue; another on Allen street, three miles out on the road to Hampden; and still another on Parker street, between Sixteen Acres and the Ludlow mills."
