The Arlington Advocate, 9 August 1889

Last Sunday morning John Roach of this town, a single man about 39 years of age, went from his home on North Union street, for a bath in Mystic pond, in company with a friend. He remained in the water after his friend was dressed and while swimming was seen to sink under the water suddenly and did not again appear. His friend went again into the water and made efforts to reach him, but the water was too deep, and it was only by the use of grapples that the body was recovered. A post mortem examination showed the cause of his death to have been heart disease.
