The Arlington Advocate, 19 November 1897
| In response to the invitation of Mr. George Y. Wellington, in last week's issue, many interested in
the organization of a historical society in this town assembled in Pleasant Hall, on Maple street, last Tuesday
evening. Mr. Wellington called the meeting to order, stating the object of the same, giving an outline of the
work that might properly claim attention and after a few remarks concerning the town's history, called
Mr. Nelson Blake to the chair, as an old West Cambridge boy and school master in early days.
Mr. Blake spoke enthusiastically in favor of the object of the meeting, stating that this society is an absolute
necessity, in order to preserve old documents and manuscripts connected with the history of our town, and
such other relics as may be loaned or given to the society.
Mr. Wellington was named chairman pro-tem and Miss Ellen W. Hodgdon secretary. Mr. Charles S. Parker put in a brief appearance and promised the aid of the Advocate in the good work and was applauded. Mr. F.W. Hodgdon, as one of the trustees of the Robbins Library, stated that he had no doubt that a room for the property of the society could be granted in the library building. After some further remarks the meeting voted to elect a committee of five to draft a constitution and by-laws for the society; also to report a list of names for officers at a future meeting to be called by the committee; James P. Parmenter, Warren A. Pierce, Henry S. Adams, Mrs. Maria E. Smith, Mrs. Ella G. Damon. Due notice will be given of the next meeting, when it is hoped we will have a full house. |
