POLICE COURT
For a long time the police have been aware that a tramp camp was located in the woods at the right of the old Fitchburg railroad tracks east of Lake Street station and several futile efforts have been made to trap the occupants, who have gained a livelihood by begging and pilfering. Last Saturday evening officers Hooley, Duffy and Irwin stole on the camp close enough to discover eight men congregated there and discharging pistols in the air made a dash. Six of the eight men were collared, but two escaped in the woods. With their captives the police returned to the police station where they were booked as David Burnham, 45, Asa W. Gibby, 46; James Colby, 38; William Taylor, 40; William Barry, 60; Frank Wilson, 42. Monday in court at Cambridge, Colby Taylor and Wilson were given thirty days in the house of correction, Burnham and Barry placed on probation, and Gibby discharged. This latter was well dressed, wore a diamond ring and was every way respectable appearing. He said he had been enticed into the camp and had been there only about an hour. He sent word to friends in Somerville and on their representations he was released. The camp was fitted with shelter, brick oven for cooking, and other rough conveniences, and has been a long time used as a resort. It is likely to remain broken up for some time.

Ten Horses Perished

The two-story stable at the corner of Mystic Avenue and Austin Street was burned Wednesday evening, and ten horses owned by George W. Prichard perished. The stable was owned by William A. Sanborn. Loss, $1,000 on building, $1,200 on horses, and $500 on stock. Engine 32 of Charlestown responded quickly to the alarm and got first water on the fire. The sewer excavations on Cross street and Broadway interfered with the Somerville Department greatly.
