OBITUARY
   Edwin Tarbell passed away at his home on School street Thursday morning, August 4, after an illness of many months. He was born on the old Hunt homestead 68 years ago and has resided in Acton all his life with the exception of time spent in the service of his country.
   At the age of 24 he enlisted in the old 86th [sic]¹ Mass. Regiment and marched through Baltimore. At the expiration of three months' service he reenlisted in the 26th Mass. regiment for three years and served his full time.
   In 1866 he opened a general grocery store which he has conducted nearly up to the time of his sickness.
   Mr. Tarbell had many friends, being a man of quiet disposition and one who loved his country and wished everyone well and proved himself a kind and faithful husband.
   A widow and one brother, George, of Neponset, survive him.
   Services were held Saturday at the Universalist church, conducted by Isaac Davis post 138 of which he was a member. Rev. F. S. Rice was officating clergyman. A quartet consisting of the Misses Fletcher, E. F. Richardson and Arthur Louden rendered several selections. Burial at Woodlawn.
   Flowers were contributed by the following: Flag pillow, G. A. R.; basket sweet peas, W. R. C.; garland of asters and roses Geo. Tarbell; garland of roses, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. W. Wetherbee; wreath of roses and heliotrope, Mrs. Dora Tuttle and daughters; Easter lilies, friends ; sweet peas, Mrs. Lottie Flagg; bouquet, Mrs. Elbridge Wheeler; sweet peas, Mrs. Frank Hosmer; spray, Mrs. H. W. Tuttle; bouquet, Mrs. G. S. Ford; spray, Mrs. C. H. Fairbanks; bouquet, Mrs. W. S. Fletcher.

   Mr. Spicer witnessed the performance at Norumbega park, Saturday evening.

   The Christian Endeavor meetings will be held at seven o'clock Sunday evenings.

   Rev. A. B. Prebles and family will pass the month of August at Dorchester.

   Harry Ross of the Lucia pharmacy is on a week's vacation. Napoleon Guertin is taking his place.

   Mr. and Mrs. James Corcoran attended the funeral of Hon. J. W. Corcoran at Clinton, Monday.

   Mr. and Mrs. Fred Worsnip and son Harry were the guests of relatives in Worcester from Friday to Monday.

   Justice Henry Boynton leaves today for his annual visit to the Pine Tree state, where he will join his family.

   Sidney Dickinson was the guest of Alton Small at the “Night Hawks' Nest,” Boone's pond, Saturday and Sunday.
———
   Leslie Rice, Arthur Jacobs, Walter Fenton and Arthur Walcott were guests at the St. Louis cottage, Sterling Junction, Sunday.
———
   Mr. and Mrs. George Henderson, Warner street, were recent guests of Rev. and Mrs. Alfred Fairbrother at Martha's Vineyard.
———
   William Miller has removed from the residence of Mrs. Charles Feeney, Pleasant street, to the home of Moses Young, Lincoln street.
———
   Mr. and Mrs. Roswell Houghton of Gloucester were guests Sunday of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Houghton, High street.
———
   The third Baptist-Methodist union service will be held Sunday at the Methodist church. Rev. A. H. Herrick will occupy the pulpit.

1 — Edwin G. Tarbell first enlisted in the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company E, the Davis Guards of Acton, and marched through Baltimore on the 19th of April 1861. After that 3-month enlistment was up he, along with most of the rest of Company E, enlisted in Company E of the 26th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, in which he served until November 7, 1864.
