John J. Crowley
Popular Police Officer Passed Away

His Death Due to Pneumonia
Served City Long and Faithfully
The many friends of Patrolman John J. Crowley were pained to hear of his death which took place last night at 9 o'clock at his late home, 107 Blossom street. His death was due to pneumonia. He had not worked steadily of late because of an ear trouble, but the development of pneumonia came as a great surprise to his family and friends.
Mr. Crowley was a very popular officer and continued to add to his list of friends because of continued acts of kindness. He was a capable officer and the department loses a valuable member. He served 9 years on the police force and during his long term of service, it was never found necessary to reprimand him. He figured in several important arrests and he had the reputation of being honest and fearless.
He was born in New York city in 1853. He was appointed to the police force, Dec. 18, 1887. While on the Opera House beat he was taken ill and had to stop work. He recovered sufficiently to serve Hathaway's theatre, but the fact that he was not a well man was known to his brother, officers and last Friday night he told Capt. Kew that he would have to take a rest. Saturday he was confined to his bed with pneumonia.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, one son, Leo J., one daughter, Grace; two brothers, Timothy of South Boston, and Patrick H., of this city; and one sister, Mrs. Julia Lynne of South Boston. Patrolman Crowley was a member of Industry Council, R.A., Division 11, A. O. H., and Court City of Lowell, F. of A.
The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
