The Arlington Advocate, 6 January 1906

POLICE COURT
One of the most flagrant violations of the Liquor law was disposed of last week, when the case of Edward Graney, of 63 No. Union St., Arlington, was tried charged with maintaining a common liquor nuisance. He was found guilty and fined $75 which he paid. Complaint was made to the police in regard to this place by prominent citizens and on Nov. 11th it was raided and a small quantity of whiskey found by the police. At the trial it was shown that the wife of the defendant had been selling liquor to children of 9 to 12 years of age who had been acting as “runners” for adults. But for a law, which in these cases makes the husband responsible for the wife's actions if he knowingly allows such conditions to exist, a complaint might, as the judge stated, have been lodged against Mrs. Graney, formerly known as the widow Roach.

GET ALL THAT’S COMING
The thug who has been operating the west end for the past few nights insulting women and attempting to embrace them, and who thus far has escaped any disturbance, except what the women have given him on whom he attempted to do the “Jack the Hugger” act, met his Waterloo good and plenty Wednesday evening when he ran up against the wrong proposition in the shape of a certain woman who was on her way up Main street to visit relatives. The “hugger” made a remark to the woman as she passed by, but not catching what he said she inquired what the remark was. His answer was an insult, but the scoundrel did not happen to be far enough away and he received a good stiff punch in the face for his pains that nearly knocked him over. By this time the attention of a man was called to the scene and he ran towards the two, which was the signal for the coward to take to his heels.
Quite a few women have been insulted by this character.
