James Henry Doherty, owner and proprietor of a general store at Cummingsville, Mass., dealing in fancy groceries and provisions. He also conducts a market garden, handling his own produce in a retail business. He established his business here in 1900. He was born on Sheridan St., Cummingsville, Aug. 24, 1860, a son of James and Sarah (Black) Doherty, who were both natives of Ireland, but came to America when quite young. James Doherty was a stone mason by trade and for many years followed that work in and around Woburn.

James H. Doherty received a grammar school education only. Leaving school at the age of 15 years he entered the leather industry, learning the currier's trade, which he followed as a journeyman for nine years. Giving up this work he purchased a milk team and conducted a milk route for a period of 10 years. In 1900, he started his grocery business, which he successfully conducts today. He served the city as alderman from his ward for one year. He married Annie Lynch, a native of Woburn and daughter of Edward and Ellen (Donovan) Lynch. Mr. and Mrs. Doherty are the parents of 12 children, six boys and six girls. Theirs is one of the families one can so often read about, but very seldom see. Their eldest daughter is the wife of Fred Marshall. The second daughter, Helen is a graduate of the Waltham Training School for Nurses. The family home is in Cummingsville.
