| South Acton.—Flags throughout the town were flown at half staff Saturday June 9, in tribute to the memory of a fine citizen, brave soldier and devoted husband as impressive though simple rites were being held at the South Acton Universalist church for the late beloved senior vice commander Isaac S. Ford, of Captain Isaac Davis Post G. A. R.
The services were conducted by Rev. A. J. Torsleff, assisted by Rev. E. H. Carritt, followed by the G. A. R. ritual with members of Edwards-Quimby Post A. L. assisting Commander George L. Towne who alone survives his late comrade. Members of the A. L. Post stood guard over the flag-draped casket, banked with floral tributes from many friends, neighbors, relatives, G. A. R. and A. L. Posts, Woman's Relief Corps, A. L. Auxiliary and Charles A. Welch lodge A. F. and A. M. of Maynard of which he had been a member for 56 years. A. L. members acted as pall bearers and at the grave in the family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery a military salute of three volleys was fired by a squad of Legion members and taps were sounded by Scout-master Arthur W. Lee and Scout Robert Montague of the West Acton Troop B. S. A. “Uncle Isaac,” as he was affectionately known was born in Canton, Maine, May 21, 1843 and came to South Acton following his marriage on March 21, 1874, to Ada I. Ryerson, where he has lived since. Besides his wife he is survived by many nieces and nephews who were very close to him and mourn his passing keenly. In his long residence here he had won the respect of all with whom he came in contact, and whose sympathy goes out to his devoted widow as the mourn the passing of a real friend. Friends and relatives were present from Clifton, N. H., Summer and Paris, Maine and Worcester, Melrose and Grafton in this State. Besides Commander Towne, A. L. Post members and Corp. Aaron J. Fletcher, 93 year old Civil War veteran, delegations were present from the Women's Relief Corps and A. L. Auxiliary. Arrangements were in charge of Guyer Fowler of Maynard. |
| The funeral of Thomas M. Ahern was held yesterday morning from the D. W. Grannan Funeral Home, 376 Massachusetts avenue. A high mass of requiem was celebrated in St. Agnes' church by Rev. Leo J. McCann. The bearers were Andrew Mahoney, Thomas Purcell, Samuel Femia, Patrick McCarthy, Thomas Burke and Michael Kelley. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Mr. Ahern, who made his home at 47 North Union street, was a life-long resident of Arlington, his parents being the late Dennis and Ellen Ahern, and had been in the employ of the town. His death occurred on Tuesday. |
