Trustee Mem. Library
Three Year Term

Louise M. Gardiner
Mrs. Gardiner feels well qualified for the position as Library Trustee, since she is a librarian by both education and profession.
She graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in library science and later received her master's degree in English literature. Her professional experience includes positions at Sweet Briar College Library, Sweet Briar, Virginia, and the Wellesley College Library, Wellesley, Mass.
Mrs. Gardiner was born in Framingham, Mass. and moved to Acton in 1956 where she now resides on Henley Road with her husband and two children; attends Co. Acton Community Church and is a member of the Acton Womans Club. She is also a member of the American Library Association, the National Association for Librarians and Trustees.
Mrs. Gardiner feels that any program or procedure which will increase the use of available materials can be considered good library practice. It would be a service to the public to have a waiting list for new books, a convenience for the Library to have a telephone so that people may be notified promptly when the books they want are in the library—it would be a further service to be able to renew a book by telephone.
She further believes that the Acton Library should evaluate its collection of books and make an effort to discard materials which are considered obsolete and supply new material which can meet the needs of a growing community. The Library could also provide exhibit space and related books for various town organizations such as the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, the Chamber of Commerce, the Womans Club, etc.
“The Library, by becoming a more integral part of the community, by evaluating its collection of books, and by improving its service to the public, could provide an active and vital library program for all the people of the town,” Mrs. Gardiner concluded.

[Mrs. Gardiner failed in her bid, losing to incumbent Florence W. Durkee 679 to 225 with 35 blanks. Durkee had been elected in 1957 to replace Vesta B. Thompson, who resigned. Gardiner ran again in 1962 when there was no incumbent and defeated Judith K. Spencer 189 to 28 with 741 blanks.-dja]
