April Meeting

April 8, 2006

Topic: Military Records at Massachusetts Archives

Speaker: John Hannigan, Reference Archivest

1:30 p.m. John Curtis Free Library, Rt. 139, 534 Hanover Street, Hanover, MA (781) 826-2927

Mr. Hannigan was born and raised in Abington and has lived there all his life. He attended Fairfield University in Connecticut and graduated in 2003 with a degree in history. He has been working at the State Archives for the past two years, conducting research focusing primarily on the Revolutionary War and colonial-era Massachusetts. He is currently finishing his Master's Degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston and preparing several articles for future publication.
He will speak about military records held at the Archives and how best to access them. John will focus on the Revolutionary War period, as that is his area of expertise, but will also touch on Massachusetts military men going as far back as 1600 and including King Philip's War, the French & Indian War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. Note: the Archives holds very few military records for the post-Civil War years. He will discuss how to find and use the military records at the state archives, and most importantly, how to understand an individual's military service given the often-scanty information provided in the original records.
