May Meeting

May 7, 2005

Irish Records

Mary Ellen Grogan, Speaker

1:30 p.m. John Curtis Free Library, Rt. 139, 534 Hanover Street, Hanover, MA (781) 826-2927

Due to a scheduling conflict with the John Curtis Free Library, our May meeting will be held on May 7, 2005.

Are you descended from one of the nearly 4.7 million Irish men and women who immigrated to the United States between 1820 and the late 1900? Have you been putting off your Irish research because it is intimidating? Certainly doing Irish research is a challenge. After all, the Irish did not always talk about the family in the "old country." You have also heard that "there are no records." Join us as Mary Ellen Grogan illustrates that records do exist and how best to research and obtain the records you need.

Mary Ellen Grogan, a professional genealogist specializing in Irish research, has been seriously studying Irish records for about ten years. She has lectured on Irish records for TIARA (The Irish Ancestral Association) as well as other genealogy groups.

Mary Ellen has made several research trips to Ireland. For her most recent, she organized and directed TIARA's first genealogy trip to Dublin in March, which was very successful for all the participants.

Mary Ellen, active in both TIARA and the Massachusetts Genealogical Council, has been involved in organizing genealogy conferences and seminars for TIARA, MGC, GENTECH, and others. She is currently the Sponsored Events Coordinator for the Federation of Genealogical Societies national conference, which will be held in Boston from August 30 to September 2, 2006.
